Claireabella
I'm at war with giant slugs! I either have to carry all the grubs up to the house every night or get my trowel to chuck the slugs out in the morning and they leave slime all over the food My OH made up some DIY feeders yesterday he'd seen on the internet; the chooks seem to like them and it keeps the slimy beggars out. They're not the prettiest feeders (and we had to improvise with the picnic beakers ) but they appear to be working. Anyone else tried these? Olly
I think the picnic beakers look rather fetching, actually! What are the pieces of pipe standing in? I'm very impressed with your ingenuity.
Chickabee
I've not tried them, but I have some very expensive feeders that look the same . Fantastic job. Any ideas how to stop them getting in my corn bin, they've taken over
mullethunter
I've bought a plastic dustbin with a lid that clips on because the slugs were getting into the feed where it was kept in a garden box.
Cat tails
I have one of those big plastic tons that have a screw lid on. And the chickens know the sound of me unscrewing the lid...
Claireabella
Thanks Olly, the pieces of pipe are standing in two small plant pots, positioned so that the holes in the pots are covered They are a very tight fit though. Unfortunately, they don't sell caps to fit over the end of the pipes, they would have been ideal. Those slugs are a nightmare this year and massive - no idea how to keep them out the corn bin Chickabee! Some people put vaseline around the edge I think?? Guest
I moved to the tub trug type feed bin after slugs invaded my old feed bins, I invested in feathers&beaky hanging feeders as I too was sick of finding slugs in the feeders every day .... the hens seem to be eating much more of their feed now so obviously did not like feed tainted with slug slime. The slugs are excessively gross this year I love your DIY feeders, brilliant
Chickabee
I had one of those lee. It turned out to be slug heaven, that's when I got the shed, which has turned out to be slug heaven
Chickabee
Ah well, I don't have tasty plants. Just shrubs and bushes. My corn was in the shed, in a container with a heavy pot of biodry on top. Argh!!
Grandmashazzie
That's a lot of feed Leeweedon, does it not go out of date quickly?I just buy one at a time, which is a bit of a nuisance.I was told it had a short shelf life.
Cat tails
You know what loads of people told me to get rid of slugs? Get chickens! ... Well that didn't work... Any other suggestions...

Lavenders_Blue
The slugs really are something else this year. I think they must be the mutant variety I can't blame the chooks for not wanting to eat them. Those big orange ones make me want to puke. Chickabee - what a shame the slugs didn't get into your tub of Biodry. I am sure that would have sorted them out
Chickabee
I have thought about sprinkling dishwasher salt all over the shed floor. Is that cruel ?
Lavenders_Blue
Probably. But slugs in the chook food is completely revolting.
