ZoeBunny
So, I have a serious case of Morehens Disease... Just collected a trio of 12-14 week old Lavender Araucanas and I'm wondering whether I've either hit the jackpot with 3 girls, or ended up with 1 or 2 boys. I'm pretty sure the purple ringed one is a girl and I think the palest one could be a boy. What do you think??? Any thoughts? I'm in love already but can only keep one boy.. Valkyrie
Have no idea, but they look lovely. You are lucky to be able to keep one boy if it turns out that way. Fingers crossed.
ZoeBunny
Thanks Valerie Any ideas people? 91 views so far and no one else having a go at guessing?
Chickabee
Is the one on the top left and the bottom right the same chicken, if so I think that's a boy. The other 2 look like girls. Remember though I'm not very good at this sexing, but I did have 2 araucana ladies and I've just checked back on my photos. Fingers crossed for you
Egluntyne
If they were sold to you as a trio, then one will be a cockerel. I'm guessing that it is the darker one without the purple leg band. A trio is 2 hens and one cockerel.
Chickabee
Is that the same one as I said egluntyne. I was going by the tail feathers and the beak. The other 2 have that lovely swept back headgear typical of girls
sjp
the one at the back left in the bottom photo looks like a boy going by it's tail feathers
Chickabee
That's the one I said. Yey I might be right at last
ZoeBunny
The lighter chick in the left of pic 1 is the same one on the far right in pic 2, no leg ring. The one on the right in pic 1 with the pink leg ring is the one on the far left back in pic 2 You can see the purple ringed one is in the centre of both pics. I ringed the two I thought were girls, but the pink ringed one has confused me. It acts like a boy but is facially identical to the purple ringed one. The palest one with no ring looks most like a boy. They were sold as a trio but the breeder was clueless as he'd hatched from bought in eggs, so his trio simple meant the first 3 birds he could catch :sigh: I didn't mind really as I got them for a steal
Chickabee
What do you mean when you say it acts like a boy. Arauncanas from my experience are quite tough cookies, and they're still really young. Look around the beak of the one with no leg ring, it's pink, that's where the wattles and comb will grow. The girls shouldn't have a comb. I think you've come up trumps
ZoeBunny
Fab.. thats what I was hoping! The pale one is going to make a cracking cockerel (the breeder thought that was a pullet) but I had my suspicions. The pink ringed one is very alert and bolshy which is what I meant by acting like a boy.. of course that doesn't make it male, but I haven't had much experience with araucanas. None of them.have showed any signs if crowing. Here's a better pic of them today, meeting our Border Terrier puppy Bertie for the first time Thanks everyone, much appreciated x Edited September 1, 2014 by Guest

Chickabee
I think SJP is talking about the same one as me. The one at the front of your new photo
ZoeBunny
I think SJP is talking about the same one as me. The one at the front of your new photo I hope so.. You and I are in agreement but SJP said the left one in the bottom photo which is the pink one. Hope she meant the left on in the 'top' photo, then we all agree
sjp
I think the one at the back in this photo pink ring is a boy the one in the front no ring is a girl the one on the right purple ring I'm not sure about but it could turn out to be a boy depending on which photo you look at

sjp
And I thought I was right for once . Never mind I'll get the hang of it one day. I know how to sex cream legbars I'm mainly basing my thought on the tails and feathers on the backs of the 2 with rings they look like the male cream legbar crosses that I've hatched the pink ring looks like it's got a tail plume feather or 2 and the start of a 'saddle' but I could be totally wrong in the way I'm reading the photos
Egluntyne
I think the one with the pink ring is a bloke. At the risk of repeating myself, if the were sold as a trio then there will be two hens and one cockerel.
Chickabee
It's ok SJP, I really want to learn how to do this, but get it wrong every time . I'll get there one day. Does SJP stand for Sarah Jessica Parker ?
Chickabee
I think I can see now. The saddle feathers sweep a different way and there are some longer more distinctive tail feathers
