First free-ranging experience

Recommended Posts

Our girls spent their first week in the eglu & run. They seem to have settled in OK and will eat from my hand and be stroked without any fuss (haven't attempted a pick up yet!)

Over the weekend we've put up the omlet netting giving then a decent sized patch of garden to explore and let them out for their first taste of free-ranging - and wow they loved it !!!! :D

They spent several hours yesterday happily exploring - in particular they are big fans of an old tree stump which is within their fenced off area! It's great when one finds a worm then runs around with it in her beak - closely followed by the other chook!!

They even came over and sat on my legs while I sat out with them for a bit!!!

Wish we could let them out like that everyday - now they have the taste for it they seemed to be waiting by the run door to be let out when I went off to work this morning! Hopefully we'll be able to let them out a couple of evenings after work during the week as well.

I love mine freeranging - now retired I or they are very fortunate to be out every day, all day.

But don't feel guilty about them pacing or up at the door. Mine even pace around the big area they have for freeranging - and when they have the whole garden - they do a perimeter march - or gather outside the back door!

Glad you had such a nice weekend with them.

dont let them make you feel guilty.....they are very good at that!

some people keep their girls in the run all the time....and their chickens are perfectly happy. Anytime that you can let your girls out - whether its half an hour or half a day....they live a life of luxury compared to normal chooks :D

I agree though - its great to sit and watch their silly antics in the garden.

ours made us feel really guilty after the first couple of times we let them out into the garden as we were off work and they were out for hours - they then started crowing everytime they saw us and paced up and down the run glaring at us to be let out!! we felt so bad!

but on everyone's expert advise from here we kept them in the run a couple of days and now just let them out in the evening once we're back from work, and try to do the same at the weekends too, and they've been fine with that and I think they have got the message at last!!

they seem much happier anyway
