PixieDust
Just spoken with our poultry man. We wanted to pick up the pullets in October when the OH is off work but the hen guy is away then. He suggests getting the last flock of the year in November. He says they will lay over winter which doesn't bother me if they don't. Any thoughts as to whether it's too late in the year? He says they will be 18 weeks at collection.
jackian
I would say not to late but I am no expert. I have had them in January and that worked fine. The good thing about that is if they are to join other girls then the days will be shorter and they wont be up early to stress the neighbours with the shouting . What are you doing here in my space ? Valkyrie
Think it's fine. I had my old adopted year olds in December prior to the worst snowfall we've ever had. Made intros a bit easier as I had them separated in the eglu, but when the snow got worse I thought not having them all cold so I popped them all in together at night. Late mornings made it easier as "Ooops, word censored!"ody wanted to come out anyway so I opened up the cube at the back and carried the munchkins back across the garden - I still had them in their own runs during the day because white stuff is nasty and we don't come out in THAT!!!! which also meant that they wouldn't bait each other through the fencing. My newbies this year were collected in January and that was fine too. The orpie laid an egg the following day so perhaps you'll be getting the odd egg too. PixieDust
Thanks for your advice. They will be my first girls so hopefully won't cause too much of a scene in the mornings My course is due to finish on 14th November so it might be the best time. I know I will spend hours watching them and trying to help a nutty cocker except them. Not good if one is trying to study Oh well, baptism of fire for the mud and cold mornings and stuff. Still at least I will appreciate the Spring when it arrives
