What are the different breeds?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys - Had the camera out at the weekend and I hadn't quite realised how different the girls are! My 2 older darker girls are 2013. The new girl is 2014, and although I thought I had got the same breed she is obviously a lot more ginger! (They are all in the sunshine).

I thought the old ones were Warrens....what is the new one? When I got her they said 'Gingernut' but I thought this was just a bit of a fad? Is it just because they are hybrids that they could be any mix of breeds?

Thanks :)

If I remember correctly, Gingernut Rangers and Warrens are the same thing. If you got the other chickens from Omlet then the darker chickens will be Miss Pepperpots. The Gingernut Ranger is a Rhode Island Red crossed with a Light Sussex and Miss Pepperpot is a Rhode Island Red crossed with a Maran and a Plymouth Rock.

there's about 8 or 9 different 'strains' of the commercial brown hen ( about half are owned by the same company through mergers and take overs and most of the breeding flocks were merged together a few years back but the names are still used) so there will be differences in colour plus the shade of colour changes as a chicken gets older after a moult and during the year

My ex-batts, which were Warrens, ranged in colour from a dark chocolatey brown to a creamy strawberry blonde, and all shades of red in between. Looks like your girlies are the same basic hybrid, but very different shades - helps when you can tell them apart and you know which one's in mischief :D

Gorgeous girls - do they have names?

Edited - of course they have names, they're in your signature  . Still gorgeous girls :D
