PixieDust
In car at shops on phone so will be brief. Winnie not laid for 4 days. Yesterday hiding under the next box. Followed Eglutines (sp) instructions for egg bound. Nothing. Today still moped and I found what looked like a brown crust bit on vent. Pulled it and out came what looked like 2.5" egg white. She has messy vent. Is it EP? Will post pic later. OH'S birthday and I am cake making this afternoon. Edited May 21, 2015 by Guest
PixieDust
OH also said on Sunday one of the eggs he had tasted odd. Not sure whose.
Chickabee
Could it be a lash?
PixieDust
I am still baking but it looks like a 2.5" long bit of cooked egg white. Brown at vent end but what I pulled out of her was white. When I have 20 minutes I will post the picture. Really bad day for this to happen
Chickabee
It sounds like a lash to me. She should perk up now she's passed it
mullethunter
How was she this evening PixieDust? I've never seen one but your description sounds how people describe a lash.
PixieDust
She was eating mealworms and racing around with the others then she goes a little quiet. Still no egg. Nothing else appeared from her vent. I will see what tomorrow brings. Will post the pic a bit later.
Chickabee
I've got one who has laid a few lashes lately. She's quite old for a hybrid. She stops laying for a while after, then we have softies. Eventually she lays again but the shells are sometimes quite thin. She's fine once she's passed the lash. You could try some tuna, sunflower seeds or limestone powder. All are good for strengthening shells and chickens well being
gavclojak
My girls have laid a few lash's they have had no problems after laying them so if she is picking up I wouldn't worry too much
PixieDust
Finally had time to upload and post this: It's on the car steering wheel. It's about 3" long and 4-5 mm wide. The darker bit was the bit hanging out of her vent and when I pulled it, (I thought it was something stuck on), all this came out. She is still not herself. She runs from me and that is NOT normal for her.
gavclojak
It looks like a lash to me, it's just another word for a shed oviduct. Maybe she is running away as she is scared your going to pull something out her rear end again Joking aside, just see how she is over the next few days, obviously if she takes a downward turn then it's a trip to the vets
PixieDust
Just been watching her. She is huddled and standing like she needs to poo - you know when the knickers drop exposing the vent briefly? Well she is standing like that constantly. Barely walking yet OH says when he let them out she seemed normal. Don't know
Egluntyne
Looks like egg membranes to me. I have to ask ..... Why have it on your steering wheel? Looks as if she is having a blip with her laying tackle. it sounds as if she is working up to laying a soft egg. Might be worth taking her to a vet if things continue. PixieDust
I was rushing out as it was OH'S birthday, to get cake ingedients. It was just a place to photograph it lol Just very worried as she is not herself at all. Dare I say almost has a look of fear on her face. Beantree
Looks like egg membrane to me as well, but there is rather a lot of it which says to me that something is very wrong. We had a bantam Leghorn last year with similar symptoms. When I felt her abdomen it was firm and I could feel something solid inside. It became apparent that there was a whole egg inside her and she was pts immediately. Her oviduct had split and the whole shelled egg had dropped inside. Think you need to check Winnie's abdomen immediately PixieDust because she may be laying internally and be in a lot of pain.
Chickabee
Oh Beantree that sounds awful. Fingers crossed pixie dust
PixieDust
I have felt but to be honest I don't really know what I am feeling for. She doesn't want to be touched much. Here is a pic I just took - not like Winnie at all. She's doing that blinking Pob used to do.
PixieDust
Should add eating and drinking well. Edited to add Vet appt 4.20pm. She is either coming home or not. Resigned to the fact she won't. Nothing I can do about that.
Chickabee
She does look down in the dumps. Her comb looks nice and red though, and her face nice and pink. Have you got some nutri drops. What are her droppings like?
Beantree
Fingers crossed I am completely wrong PixieDust. Eating and drinking well is good though. Our little girl just sat on the floor motionless with her eyes shut.
mullethunter
Dare I ask how it went?
PixieDust
There is a softy quite far up. No fluid in the abdomen. Good colour in wattle and face. Not thin. He believes the white thing was an egg. She has had a shot of calcium in the breast which should expidite the softy within 48 hours. Fingers crossed Edited to say consult £17.95, calcium injection zero!
mullethunter
Well worth it for getting her sorted. Fingers crossed
Chickabee
That's amazing. My own vet doesn't do chickens, other than euthanasia. Another not so local vet charges a fortune. Hope she's feeling better soon
Beantree
A condition I have never come across and the vet sounds confident she can be sorted. Very reasonable charge as well. Keep us posted PixieDust.
