ads1080
My rir hybrid around 30 weeks today laid a 2 and 3/4 ounce egg, it looks massive and is much bigger than the others she had laid. She has been laying for around 5-6 weeks. Is this normal or just an unusually large egg. Adam
Hippie Chick
My Rhode Rock (Rhode Island Red hybrid) started off laying average sized eggs, then I had a few really huge ones (poor girly!) and some of these were double yolkers, unfortunately I neglected to weigh them. Now she's settled into laying the biggest eggs out of all my little flock - I've just weighed today's egg from her and it is 2 1/2 ounces (71 grams) which is probably a good average for her. She's been laying for roughly 8 weeks now so not too far distant from yours From what I've seen their eggs do vary quite a bit in the early stages so I'd say it's quite normal. quickcluck
Totally normal. I find that you are more likely to get a double yolk also when they begin laying....
sjp
perfectly normal warren/isa brown type hybrids have been bred to lay and egg at about the 60-70gram mark +/- about 5grams and get to the size as soon as possible after they start to lay as that's the size supermarkets have 'trained' customers to expect
