The Dogmother
I read about this cake in an article and was intrigued how it could work. Sadly, the photos are too big to post on the forum, but click on the link above for pics and a printable recipe. The recipe is very easy to follow, but do bear in mind... The batter is very runny and looks like a bowl of sick!!! It splatters when you are mixing it, so wear a pinny! It is absolutely delicious, and magically turns from something vile-looking, into the cleverest and scrummy cake. I ate it chilled with a little nutmeg grated on top. I shall be trying the chocolate version next!
mullethunter
Ive seen that on Pinterest. Does it hold its shape when cut and is the middle like egg custard?

The Dogmother
Ive seen that on Pinterest. Does it hold its shape when cut and is the middle like egg custard? Yes, and yes but you have to let it cool, then refrigerate before cutting. I made mine in a rectangular tin, so it was shallower than it would have been in a square as recommended. You have to watch it to catch the right time when it colours and sets. The bottom layer is relatively solid, and holds it together. The mid section is a lovely creamy egg custard, and the top is a light fluffy sponge... I have the whole cake to myself and I think I could easily make myself sick eating too much, so I am going to stop now! It would be lovely served with fresh raspberries on top, and shavings of dark chocolate to make it a classy dessert.
Olly
I've always wanted to try this. I've got a 12-year old friend spending the day with me on Wednesday and I was planning to do some baking with her, this might be just the thing! Thanks for the link. jess1merlin
All purpose flour, is that plain flour or self raising Going to give it a go with plain flour and see what happens.
Olly
It's plain flour - 'all purpose' so you can use it for anything. I didn't get round to making this in the end, but it's still on my list!
The Dogmother
I used plain
jess1merlin
Clare you were right about it looking like a bowl of sick however it is very nice. I didn't have an 8" square tin so used 2 loaf tins but it seemed to work ok. It would be nice with fresh fruit and a spot of cream as a dessert. I wonder what it would be like with lemon extract instead of vanilla
The Dogmother
A friend was wondering about making it with a dab of lemon juice and grated lemon juice... I think it would be lovely.
