jilly
Thanks to everyone who kindly answered my post about whether to get 4 or 5 hens. I was a bit worried about it. Anyway I listened to you all and went for the 5. I am really pleased. We got a sussex comet, golden rocket, sussex rock, black comet and a speckledy. They are all goergeous !! (sorry I am a bit biased) We got them home ok and put them to bed straight away as Lisa at Garden Poultry had advised. They settled in and we keep checking on them and they are all tucked up for the night and huddling together. They look soo cute. They aren't fighting yet but we will see what tomorrow brings when we let them out into the run together !!!? Jack and Harry are so excited about them and Alfie who is only 22 months is amazed at them. He watched us put them into the CUBE and shut them in safe and sound, but then kept wandering round looking underneath to see where they were. He wonders where they have gone bless him. He will be pleased to see them tomorrow morning. Jack and Harry are already drawing up a "morning CUBE door opening rota" between them. I have taken loads of pictures and when I have the time I really must look into how to add them to my postings. I also need to check out how to add a green cube and put my chooks on my personal profile too, sorry. Thanks again, Jilly x Edited August 22, 2007 by Guest

Egluntyne
I don't know what is wrong Jilly. I tried adding it to my profile and it worked. Did you remove the * ? I'm sure Kate or a mod will help you. What on earth are you doing out of bed at 1.21am? More importantly....what have you called your hens? jilly
Hi, I know that is so sad isnt it. Going to bed so late. I didn't get to bed until 3.30 am this morning because 1) I was too excited about the hens to sleep and 2) I kept going into the garden listening to them to see if they were ok. Funny thing is there was not one peep out of them and they slept soundly all night. We let them into their run this morning and they seem to be getting along fine !? (unless there is a honeymoon period?) There has been not one bit of featherpecking or squabbling. They have sussed the grub feeder out, but not the new style glug drinker. My hubby David bless him was worried as today is hot here. So he insisted moving the glug so it sits on the floor so they can see what is in there then he says we will move it up day by day till they drink from the "udder" thingys. I'm not convinced. I think we should have started how we mean to go on and let them find it themselves? But hey what do I know. They have been drinking from the glug on the floor so at least we know they have had a drink today !! Time will tell. This is so new to us. David and I had our breakfast on the patio this morning with the boys as it is so nice and we just watched the hens every move from a small distance. It was so nice. I felt like we had had another few additions to our family (like when you bring the baby home from hospital) how sad is that, but I did. I felt all nervous that we were now on our own but really excited too !! They are all so lovely, and are all different so the boys know which one is their own, and that is nice for them. (then again the boys are going through a pecking order squabble as they have been arguing this morning who's is the strongest hen, and who's is the most bossy etc. They are worse than the hens !!) David says maybe we should have stuck to hens in the beginning instead of children, (only joking !!) It probably would have been much easier tho Will try now and add my CUBE picture to my profile. We are discussing names already, and will post them soon !! Thanks to all !!! Jilly x
BeckyBoo
Well done Jilly! When we got our cube we introduced 5 hens at the same time who'd never met and we had very little trouble as they were all "new" at the same time. Hope yours continues to be peck free! And when you've finished with it could you please send the sun down here as it's been so dark I've had the lights on and earlier I had the heating on! In August!! jilly
Hi, Kate if you are out there or any of the moderators can you help I am struggling to get the green CUBE picture to show in my profile. jilly
Well my girls have all gone to bed themselves tonight and there is already a clear pecking order. The sussex rock is the boss by far. She shooed all the hens one by one into the cube via the ladders then kept pacing up and down for a bit as if to be watching and checking. Then joined the others in there. This afternoon the other hens have been bossing the golden rocket (like a gingernut ranger) around a bit. Not a problem and not feather pecking but just a little peck in her direction when she went near them. She is definately the youngest out of them all, and probably the softest so I'm not surprised she is bottom of the pile bless her ! Amazingly enough after we let them all see what was in the glug by placing it on the floor of the pen. We raised it up this afternoon and they have all taken beautifully to drinking from the automatic glug !! I am really surpised as I thought this was so different to what they are used to but they really do work !! Hope this carries on. They are all quiet now so hopefully they will continue to get along tomorrow ?! still deciding on names. We thought we had it sussed long before they arrived but now everybody wants to changes their hen's name. I like Tallulah, Poppy, Hermione, Dasiy-May (or Daisy-Mae?) and Tilly. I think I will have to put my foot down given that I am seriously outnumbered by my hubby and 3 boys. I think it is time for me to choose some girly names that I like !!
