sweetpea08
Hi Just wondering what everyone does when they go in to change water and food to prevent chickens from escaping. Its a shame that there aren't many feeders about that can be refilled from outside of the run. Nearly ready for the girls Cube is almost completely up my fingers are so sore just got to put back panel on any tips?
Luvachicken
I would throw a big handful of treats at the furthest point from the feeder and water that way they will run to the treats while you get in and sort things out. If you get them a treat ball it will take them longer to eat them and keep them out of your way for longer. Sorry no tips about the cube as mine came with a man that did it all for me
Lewis
I wouldn't worry too much about it, once the girls get into a routine they'll be far more interested in what you're feeding them than trying to escape!
Olly
I do exactly what luvachicken says, throw in a small handful of treats and nip in while they're busy. Because my walk-in-run has a 'stable' door I can reach in and refill the feeder without letting the hens out but I still need to go in to collect eggs. Hippie Chick
I have a walk-in run so I stand on one leg while opening the door and wave the other foot at the chickens trying to escape. Usually while telling them to 'stay'. I think my neighbours are amused by the whole palaver! Most of the time it works. Sometimes the Rhode Rock will use the hovering foot as a mobile stepping stone and hop on and over it to escape into the exciting garden If I really don't want them to escape I'll take some treats with me, a few dandelions I've dug up or a handful of mealworms to get their attention. Chickabee
Never had a problem. Just shut the door behind me. The girls are far too Intresteted in what I've got for them. They seem to always be convinced it's something extra special. Even when it's just pellets
sjp
use a bigger feeder fill it first thing in the morning (before they get let out) and then leave em to it
