BridieLou
Hiya. Our current set up is a Go Up with 2 metre run. Our three girls free range 5 days a week as we're not precious about that garden (laud knows you can't afford to be with chickens...). But we're getting our garden landscaped and so it's time to get a WIR and restrict them a little. I'm thinking about getting a 3.1x3.1 metre Omlet WIR (the tall one) for the corner of the garden, then removing their existing run and just popping the coop on legs inside it. The idea is that we stop them free ranging really, and that they live in there for the most part. The total internal run size would be 7.3 ms (so 2.5 per chook). We'd then pave under, cover with soil and throw a load of woodchip down for them to scratch about it. Could also throw some toys in to entertain them (perches, a swing etc). What are your views on the size of this? Does anyone have this set up? Thanks all.
BridieLou
I have just found this thread on the forum: http://club.omlet.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12663 SO much inspiration - some of these are beautiful!
chooksRCute
I can't see it being a problem, that's quite generous I've got the 3x3 hi rise WIR with a Cube plus 2m with six hens, & will be adding another 4 of my youngsters once they're POL later this year....total of ten! Ok, so they all get some free range together most days but not always, & rarely if I'm away an my son's left in charge. I think they're happy, logs, perches & 2 old tyres as dustbaths. Never had any squabbling or feather pecking....fingers crossed! My garden is landscaped & rather precious as its small, but I've fenced off a bit for them to enjoy at my discretion & I move the fencing regularly to give the lawn a reprieve. It seems to work for us.....well - I've still got a lawn albeit with some turf patches added this summer
BridieLou
Ten chickens! My dream! Thanks for getting back to me, it's nice to hear other opinions. Your set up sounds lovely and if they're not pecking or anything they must be pretty happy! You've reminded me on dustbaths, I'd be hated if they didn't get one of those! Tyre sounds like a good idea, too. The more reading I do and the more images I look at I realise they'll be pretty happy really - there aren't that many of them (yet )
chooksRCute
Yes well that morehens disease can strike anytime, anyplace....I started with 4, ended the 1st year with 6......then just had to try a broody out ...broke my heart to part with three of those but the dreaded disease struck & I've kept 4 growers. With Regards to the tyre....they give them away.....get the biggest you can manage because they like to practice a rugby scrum in there
mullethunter
I think that sounds good BridieLou - plenty of space. I have 6 bantams in a 3 x 2 lo-rise WIR attached to Cube plus run, and they're quite happy on days (or when we're away - weeks) when they're shut in.
