Softies

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm not 100% certain, although I have a suspicion who it might be, but one of our girls seems to lay a softie either on the same day as laying a regular egg... or about once, maybe twice a week.

How long should that go on for before I become concerned? Or is it possible she might do that her whole life?

I'm wondering if it's because she is not getting enough calcium. I leave bowls of oyster shells and grit near their food, but they never seem to avail themselves of them...

Any ideas?

Andy

I had a black tail hybrid that laid softies for all her laying life the only way I could control it was to put life guard tonic in the drinking water one week a month after advice from member of the PP forum as adding calcium to the feed could have caused the rest of my mob problems. I'd know when to add the LG as I'd get a egg with a thin shell or no shell

I now have a LS who up to this last Autumn laid thin shelled eggs that didn't improve with life guard but so far after a broody induced moulting in September has been laying good shelled eggs I'm just hoping it carry's on once she starts laying again in the new year

the main part of your problem through is she's trying to lay to eggs a day is she only recently started to lay? as most times girls that try to lay a couple of eggs a day 'grow' out of it after a few days laying

I have some poultry tonic and some ACV. I'll have to try and remember to give them some every other week or something. Maybe that'll perk them up.

I was wondering whether both my Legbars are laying - but I haven't had 2 blue eggs in one day to confirm it.

Do you suppose it could be the other Legbar coming in to lay? I had ruled her out because the shells aren't blue... but could it be she just doesn't lay blue eggs?

Maybe I've accused the wrong bird, and it's not who I think it is at all!

ACV is more for the guts life guard is purpose made for egg laying originally for pullets just before and as their start to lay to help their body convert the calcium compound in their diet into calcium that can be used for shell

I find that it's brown egg layers that are prone to thin and soft shelled eggs my blue and green eggs seem to have thicker shells.

I know what you mean I know I've got at least 3 of my 6 pullets laying because I've got 3 different shapes to the eggs and at least 2 different shades light brown and cream but I'm getting slightly different sizes of the brown eggs the cream one plus one of the brown are a constant size for birds that have been laying for a couple of weeks

I'm had a couple of eggs together a few days plus a single in the last 2 weeks hence I know 3 are laying and 9 eggs between Saturday and yesterday plus 3 eggs from the hens 12 total so far I'm an egg up on this time last week. I'm holding out for a green egg
