Natspringy
Hi all, I'm wondering if if you could help me please. We've just had a chicken go broody, which is fine atm and fingers crossed we seem to have stopped her. BUT my worry is we are away end of June for two weeks and my neighbour is looking after the girls. I'm a bit concerned that one could go broody whilst we are away and if it's very hot could be very dangerous for her. Not sure what I can ask him to look out for in one or two visits a day to make sure all is okay? Also wondering if there's any thing I can do to make the heat less of an issue in the coop (we have an eglu inside a walk in.)?? All advice would be very gladly welcomed. Thank you so much! The Dogmother
I had one go broody just before I went away; I left her to it as it's not really fair to expect my neighbour to look after a hen in a broody cage. She's now been in the cage for 3 days 24/7, back out and is back in lay. Have a look on youtube for videos on how to set up a broody cage
Natspringy
Thank you. No I wouldnt want to put that on my neighbour I'm just worried about the impact on a broody in a nest box in the heat if we do just leave her to it. Also the other chickens are getting hot queuing. I've been considering a cat carrier for them as a cooler alternative??!
The Dogmother
She will be a very hot lice magnet, who will starve herself rather than move off the nest! Broody cage is the way to go!
Natspringy
Thank you. Yes I may do that. She is coming home out atm to eat drink and dust bathe so atm am not too worried. But really concerned what I do if it happens when we are away for 2 weeks because yes hot, hungry, lice magnet and other chickens don't want to lay in there. If before I can try break but if we are away not sure what we can do! (Planning ahead not away till June. But unexpected broody in first season and rare for our breed!) The Dogmother
If she is broody when you go away, then I'd put her in a separate coop and ask the sitters to pop her off the nest as often as they like
