beckym
Hi all. I have been on holiday for a week and a neighbour looked after our girls. I got back today and one of them (we have two and they are 4 years old) has two lumps on her back. They are large (imagine a golf ball chopped din half and stuck on her back) and hard and are about two thirds way down her back. I felt them while stroking her. They are both equidistant to the other and in exactly the same place on either side. I cant put a photo as there is really nothing to see. I have had a good rummage about in her feathers, which she didnt mind and I cant see anything, I can just feel them. They are not a weird colour of anything, just skin coloured. She didnt mind me touching them so I don't think they are causing pain. She is eating and drinking, exploring and pecking as normal so I didn't think she is ill. Does anyone know what they are? They other hen doesn't have them. Weird. I don't think its a big thing to worry about. If there was one I would be really concerned but because they are in exactly the same place either side I think its ok. I would however be keen to get someone else take on this please. Should I be concerned? PS. Its been hot here this week- the first bit of warm weather after a very cold winter. Thanks in advance, Becky. Beantree
I have absolutely no idea, which isn't very helpful I know. But if she is happy leave her alone I think.
beckym
Thank you Beantree. They are still there but they don't seem to be troubling her. Its been hot so I'm not sure if its to do with that. Very strange but she is still eating, drinking , scratching about and seems fine. Odd! Any further suggestions anyone please let me know. Thanks. The Dogmother
Are you able to post a photo, indicating their position on the hen's back? I also have no idea at this stage, but you have 2 possible courses of action as it stands: Take her to a chicken-savvy vet Leave her to get on with it and observe her behaviour for any signs of deterioration. I would do the latter, but one of us might be Abel to help with a bit more information.
Plum
Could be sebaceous cysts though odd they are symmetrical. The vet can cut cysts out.
Lewis
Are they still there? It's strange that they're bilateral, I wonder if you're feeling the top of her femur/hips. You'd be surprised how many times people will come into the vets for a lump or tick to be removed for it to be a nipple that they've been pulling at
