soapdragon
I don't like raw toms nor do the boys. Hubs and the hamster love them. So, in defference to the Hubs and hamster I now have some home grown Ailsa Craig rapidly going upwards in a grow bag. I have staked them but am not sure what to do next apart from feed and water and shout at any passing slugs. Do I pinch out the tops or take off the side shoots? Luvachicken
Others may differ but I have left my sideshoots on this year, unless they are untidy. I find they always have flowers on and will give me tomatoes. I don't mind the fact that there might be smaller or less tomatoes as there are extra flowers for the bees. AndyRoo
The only thing I remember from growing them before is that if you pinch out some of the new shoots and buds the tomatoes you do end up with will be bigger.
Cat tails
Monty Don goes for tall and slim most of the time, so you have less chance of blight. But he has a gazzilion plants. I normally let mine make a few side shoots, remove the rest, so I get a slightly bushier plant as I only have two in a bag.
