CockADoodleDoo
i am thinking of getting a 4th hen but i dont know whether i need to by an extension or not? they get about 2 hours free range time on weekdays and pretty much all day on weekends. i was thinking of getting a cream legbar (there soo expensive!) because they are a small breed and they lay blue eggs! Has anyone on here got any cream legbars and if so what are they like? are they nice birds to keep?
Helen&Lee
I have a Cream Legbar - I only picked her up on the 20/08/07 with the others (Brahmas) Now in my excitement I didn't ask exactly how old they all were - I had had a conversation a month before asking for chooks 18 - 20 weeks but I reckon my Cream Legbar is maybe a bit younger. She is lovely, a bit nervous still - but as the smallest she was put in her place the first few days by the others. She fears none of them though so I have high hopes for gaining her confidence around us. She still cheep cheeps - so cute. I'm also looking forward to the blue shelled eggs Heres a picture of her last week - we are still deliberating over names Helen
Nicola H
I have a Cream Legbar, she is lovely but very nervous and very broody..............I have never been able to pick her up she just squarks at me and runs away when I try although she will eat out of my hand, because they are a pure bred hen they won't lay as many eggs as a Hybrid they go off lay during the winter months and they are prone to broodiness, but they have lovely markings and are very pretty Bunty is everybodys favourite in our household, just don't tell the others............. feemcg
Heres my CL Wendy (cos her toes are bendy ). I kept her out of my 1st hatch, now 26 weeks and not an egg in sight (although she has started crouching). I've heard her 2 sisters have been laying since 22 weeks! She is very friendly and stays close, I'm always tripping over her. She stands at my feet till I lift her and doesn't struggle to get down (unlike some of the others). I have another 11 CL eggs in the incubator as people have been asking me for them.

sparkleeeeee
oh i have three cream legbars, they are lovely i paid £10 each for them at 17 weeks, which is what i have paid for all my chooks. might be just cheaper here, there was a breader who wanted £25 each but he said a few nasty things about the eglu so i didnt even go to see them. i am still awaiting an egg from them and i keep saying 'any day...any day' and they are 29 weeks now, probably just working on that perfect egg. they have a lovely nature and are quite calm and laid back, they eat anything that you give them and have been very tolerant of the toddlers. they can fly very high so they need their wings clipped if freeranging, i had to put a roof on my new run before i put them in, they arent very smelly either, i found the leghorns alot smellier. they love sleeping on one of the branches in the run during the day all huddled up together, they are just so sweet . there are some photos in my album (link below)
bellekatz
I paid £15 for my CL at 18 weeks - got her in September but she didnt lay for me until january!! She lays about 3 eggs a week. sometimes more, but is really friendly. lets me pick her up and eats out of my hand etc etc. her name is Ellie which is short for Elvis, so named because of her quifff of feathers!! James H
I was going to get 4 chickens and have them in the standard eglu with 2 meter run but then we decided to go for 3 as one member of the family dropped out just before purchasing, i think you could get away with having four chickens in the 2 meter run but it would be nice if you put perhaps just an extra meter on if possible
AJuff
Hello CockaDoodleDoo, I know just your dilemma. I had 3 hens in a standard eglu before considering extra hens. I wanted blue egg layers too but there were no cream legbars around at the time. I opted for the columbines from Glencroft Poultry in North Yorkshire. (Check out their web site, he has farms around the country and can deliver) They are a new hybrid bred from the cream legbar. They have an 80% chance of laying blue/green eggs, the rest lay pastel coloured eggs. I paid £8 each for two 12 - 14 week olds. One is crested and the other not. Heather the slightly older one looks just like the picture of Helen & Lee's. Hilda is slightly darker but has the same feather markings. Another few weeks to wait for eggs . . . . . I opted for two as they were younger and two would be easier to integrate as they would have each other for company. I also bought a run extension which is great because it gives them the space they need BUT it is heavy to move around and is better suited to a permanent place. I love having five hens, why have 4 when you can have 5?
Hen Watch
Cream legbars look lovely. I only have 4 hybrid girls (all lovely too of course). I had all 4 in a standard eglu run at first. But shortly after bought the 1m run converter to add onto it. I thought about another run extension on top of that but decided against it as it is a little less easy to move about with the converter on as it is. And my girls seem happy enough with the extra meter of space. So if you've got room in your garden, the extra bit on the standard run is worth giving some thought to.
