AmberleyJo
Hello. I was hoping someone would be able to give me some advice. I have a 18 week old male Dwarf Netherland called Fudge. He's booked in to be neutered in a months times. I'd then like to get him a mate (to keep him company in his Rablu which I'm just about to order!) but I'm not sure how to go about this. Is it best to get a female partner? Does she have to be spayed before we pair them up? Can you buy rabbits that are already spayed? Questions, Questions, Questions! Thanks, Jo. Chickybaby
I would have thought a female would be ok. Best thing to do is have a word with your vet when you take him in to be spayed.
victoriabunny
Definitely get a female. He may well fight with another male but he will welcome a girlfriend with open arms! Wait at least a month after his castration - there is a chance that he could still be fertile for this length of time, as sperm can hang around in their tubes for a bit. After a month you'll be OK. A female doesn't need to be spayed before you put them together if he has been castrated. You will need to get her spayed when she's about six months old, purely to prevent her from getting uterine cancer, which she otherwise has an 80% chance of getting. It's unlikely that she will already be spayed, unless you go to a rescue centre - which is a good idea anyway. Lots of lovely bunnies out there need good homes! jasperrabbit
A female is definitely best but you need to take the introduction very carefully. If you just put her into HIS run, he will be unhappy and attack her. Find some nice neutral territory and take it slooow. If you can let them see each other (two hutches?) for a while before the intro to get them used to the other's presence it will help. You will also have to be prepared for the fact that they may never get on (unlikely but possible).
Lottie
I have a male and a female and they get along really well. Oh and try to get a rescue rabbit they are really caring and can be bought spayed so I suggest you do that.
seanppk
Agreed with all of the above. Get him a lovely lady bunny (spayed) and make the introductions slowly and in neutral territory, or they may rip chunks out of each other . Enjoy!
