What time of day do your chickens lay eggs?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Last Thursday I purchased a second-hand eglu complete with 2 gingernuts. :D DH thought I was mad when I told him it was 80miles each way to get them but it was well worth it not to have to wait for 1st October for Omlet to deliver a reconditioned one, the chickens are really friendly for having been handled so much already and it was a complete bargain!

Anyway, on Friday we had a 68g egg laid at around 10am, then nothing over the weekend which I expected after the trauma of their relocation. Yesterday and today there has been a large egg (73g and 68g) in the nest when I've opened the eglu door just before 7am (so I can't tell who's not pulling their weight, although I have my suspicions!! ).

Being new to all this chicken malarky, I was interested to know whether everybody else's chickens lay eggs at consistent times each day or is it just as and when they feel like obliging us?

Thanks

Jules

They tend to lay a bit later every day until they miss a day then start laying early again. It take around 25 hours to produce an egg so they won't always be at the same time. My Gingernut, Marilyn has had a few days off from laying then started again while the Pepperpot has laid for around 9 days then misssd a day then lays for another 8 or 9 days.

It also depends on the age of your chooks and the time of year. They need the long daylight hours to lay every day, I find mine are skipping more days now the nights are getting longer. And the older chooks lay less than the younger ones. You don't say how old your girls are. After their first year they lay fewer but larger eggs.

wow ours aren't as well trained as everyone else's it seems! I think ours are classed as Gingernuts (RIR/light sussex first crosses) and they lay I think about 5 days in a row then have a day off and they get a couple of hours later each day I think - when the days were longer over summer when we got them we were getting eggs laid at about 7 in the evening, but now they don't seem to lay any later than about 5pm

Mine lay at all sorts of different times but not usually after 3pm.

One of our Pepperpots laid today after a two and a half week break. My hubbie put two ping pong balls in the nest box yesterday evening because he had read in a book that after a disruption they can be encouraged to lay if they find a place with eggs in that then seems safe. I don't know if it was a coincidence but it was nice to get an egg again.
