Richard
I put newspaper pages in the trays in my Cube - so that I can tip the poo out easily. Any one else do that? (I do the same in the Eglu). The Cube trays are the exact right size for the London freebies - the Metro, London Lite and theLondonpaper. I don't buy ANY papers - I work in London two days a week and pick up whatever is left on the train. The Grauniad pages don't go in the Cube at all well - neither do the Telegraph pages. The Times is not very good either. In fact, the freebies are the best - as is the EDP (Eastern Daily Press for all the unfortunates who live in deprived areas - ie areas that aren't in East Anglia). There's something quite satisfying in putting the celebrity pages of the London freebies - full of piccies of Paris Hilton and Pete Docherty (sorry fairycake - I know you're a fan) Lindsay Lohan or whatever - and then cleaning them out the next day after the chickens have poo-ed all over them. I'm being really horrid - I'm sorry, it must be the medication .... But newspapers pages plus chicken poo are brilliant in the compost heap. I dont have a cube, but put newpaper in the poo tray of my eglus. Completely agree.....especially when "posh " is covered in poo!! fab! fairy&cake
Richard darling, in not a fan, - i simply once knew him whilst he went out with my friend . Although 'Cant Stand me now' is GENIUS. ross however is smitten with him, and he would marry the junkie if he proposed, I know what you mean though , something very nice about letting the chooks poo on celebs
chocchick
I worry about the quality of newspaper my chickens are exposed to I do imagine them reading it sometimes I find 2 folded sheets of the metro (or free through the door paper) in a cross cover the nest nicely. An unfolded sheet is a bit long for the main part of the eglu tray, although one sheet folded lengthways covers the piece that sticks out if the chickens don't get hold of it and shred it everywhere (Megan ). Richard
I worry about the quality of newspaper my chickens are exposed to Brilliant I am now thinking about them, trying to read the papers through the roosting bars! Move up now Daisy I want to read the next bit. I'm a Taurus, but I can't see the right bit. Well, Arrietty, what do thing of that skirt, I certainly wouldn't go out wearing THAT! And what about the English Cricket Team, what a pathetic show - we could do better. Fancy, can't cope with the bowling ... What about this Madelaine Mc whatever child - I've just about heard enough of that to last me forever, haven't they got anything else to talk about. And Northern Rock ..... what's that going to do to the price of eggs eh? eh?

chelsea
in some of the coloured sections of the newspapers Ella thinks that the "green" pictures are grass and pecks it She also did this with the pictures of pansies on the bag of compost we had in the garden - she thought they were real
The Dogmother
Daft hen! I just love the idea of Posh, Paris and the ilk being covered in poo - divine justice if you ask me Mine just have Hemcore in the poo tray - it absorbs all the poo and wet....perhaps they're deprived. Guest
When I first had my hens and used newspaper, I was always careful about what they could see. I thought that faces might frighten them, so I was careful which way up I put the papers. Seems really stupid now!
The Dogmother
You're quite right to worry Ginette - a chance glimpse of Posh or Kate Moss might put them off-lay!
Jules.
I use shredded confidentially type paper in the nest box, & newspaper in the tray- it's a bit too long to fit across the tray, so I fold over one short edge a bit to give a double layer on the nest box side where all the poo is
chickencam
I use newspaper in the tray then empty it into the compost bin every morning and I am hoping for supersize veg next year! We used our confidential shredding and shredded newspaper for a while but just found that they got it caught around their feet or dragged it out on purpose thus ending up with paper mache in the run. We now use straw or wood chips but I'm sure they eat them!

Jules.
But newspapers pages plus chicken poo are brilliant in the compost heap. hear hear! My compost bin was full until I got my chooks, it has rotted down now to 2/3 full!
craftyhunnypie
Hubby - has just come up with an idea. He sees a good market for eglu & cube poo tray liners. He said something absorbent is needed. I've told him I'm ok with newspapers. But he insists that something like always ultra for eglus is definitely needed (he says wings could be included). Dear dear, the mind of my hubby. Emma.x

Richard
I use shredded confidentially type paper in the nest box, & newspaper in the tray- that's exactly what I do - and it's worked for us for the last >3 years. Even the shredded paper, which isn't newspaper, but proper white paper, rots down really well in the compost heap.

Perhaps I made a mistake one day - that would account for the lack of eggs wouldn't it? Poor girls, must have been one terrible shock.
