And now I feel really bad...

Recommended Posts

We don't get so many people at the door, but my goodness do we get many phone calls, for all kinds of things, like double glazing, mobile phones, health insurance (I couldn't stand that one, people calling you to remind you that considering the odds, you're quite likely to get some kind of cancer some day... should be illegal)... I find it so, so hard to get rid of them, cause it's a choice between between straight and rude ('no thanks' and hanging up) or being bit more patient and kind but then mostly they don't let go... the thing is I feel sorry for them, cause mostly they are paid on commission and also they are trained to not let go... all the lines they come up with have been taught to them by whoever runs the team...

A very close friend of mine did door to door knocking while studying to make some much needed money, and the stories he used to tell me were terrible... He wasn't the kind to push anything beyond reasonable, but still had to get his job done, and these were I think the worst two years of his life... At the best people would not listen to what he was trying to say, not wanting or looking to buy what he was selling, or would turn really nasty... I would never recommend anyone to get into cold selling, it's just a most depressing experience for both seller and people who rightly expect to be left in peace in their own home...

We don't get too many telephone calls as we registered with TPS. Of the few we do get I ask them to clarify which company they work for before they get into their stride, I ask them to hold while I find a pen to take down their details, then I ask for their name and the name of their manager and ask them to specify where exactly they got my number from as I don't fill in surveys or anything like that. If they haven't hung up by now I explain that we are registered with TPS and I will now be passing their details to TPS. That's when they apologise profusely and hang up quickly.

On a bad day I just leave the telephone sat next to the TV for 10 minutes (teletubbies is enough to finish anyone off!)

Our phone calls have dropped now we are registered with TPS too - I would recommend it to anyone.

But, I have been getting heaps on my mobile :?

Now, my mobile is rarely used. Its for emergencies - children sick at school etc, so when I started getting lots of calls from an 080800 number where there was no one answering when I picked up I began to get cross.

So, when I eventually got an answer & found it was VODOPHONE - MY SUPPLIER I told them in no uncertain terms that if they ever called me again I would change supplier.

The annoying thing is both Vodaphone & Phones4U have my number, but I ticked a box to ask that they do not call me,but it hasn't seemed to have stopped them :roll:

We don't get door knockers any more, because we are one of just three houses set back from the road in a little service road and they can't even see our houses.

However, when we did move here Mum hadn't sold her old house and was transferred for her gas and electricity after signing up at the door WHEN "Ooops, word censored!"ODY WAS LIVING THERE. When I got to the bottom of it they had looked up the name but didn't know the phone number or even have the right date of birth. Took about 3 montsh to get changed back though.

My Dad was a fanatic aetheist - and when any of the folk from the religions that come to your door (dont' want to upset anyone who does this, but I'm afraid I find them a pain) came to our door he used to welcome them in, take them into the front room and shut the door.

An hour or two later they used to emerge, somewhat dazed. My Dad just loved arguing!!!

I had a cavity wall bloke round and agreed to let him measure up and quote. It took him some time to realise that we had 22 inch solid walls!

he wasn't amused and said I should ahve told him - I said that he didn't ask, but he wasn't mollified and went off in a huff :)

the house we had then was brick walls. I now live in a Norfolk house that is an amalgamation of a cottage from tthe 1750's with a Victorian addition, around 1900. It has solid flint walls which are around two feet thick. Mind you, when we did the extension I realised that 'solid' is a bit of a eumphamism for, sort of solid outside with any old rubbish in the middle!

there was absolutely all sorts - brick, cement, rubble, newspapers, sarnie debris etc etc. and great big gaps! And it was loose as h*ll!

I'm rebuilding/repointing my old garden wall (dates back to the same as the cottage) and that is just the same - its brick and flint to all intents and purposes, but in the middle its all loose and rubbish. Its a challenge! I gave up doing it with lime mortar and now use lime and white cement - at least it looks authentic!

The all time favourite song thread has got me listening to my old stuff. All the way from Memphis, Mott the Hoople, has just taken me back a long time. Fantastic days!

I've got them all on itunes now - and its playing Free; Alright Now. Wow - summer of 1970, I had taken my O levels and was having a terrific summer sailing (and working on a chicken farm - not so good). I remember that summer, it was hot for at least 13 months and just went on and on.

Talking of hot summers, 1972 was a good one too (in my memory all the summers pre-1977 were tropical and lasted forever) - You wear it well is my song from that summer. I gave up drinking for a whole month (can't remember why), and was working on my girlfriend's (now 'her indoors' - we go back a long long time; married in '75) Dad's building site before going to University.

Magic days!

I love the old Norfolk flint or pebble houses - there's a similar style in Buckinghamshire where Phil's folks live - flint faced, with red brick edging.

Funy you should say about fave old songs - I was reminiscing aboutu the same thing with a friend the other night - have a look on my blog (www below) and you'll find it... a couple of postings back.... some of my old faves. I find that having spanned so many musical 'ages' my taste is pretty eclectic; Rosie has picked up on that too and is as happy listening to The Kinks as boogying to Ibiza hard trance.

Its great when children love all sorts of music & from all eras, isn't it?

My eldest daughter, who is 14 is really into vintage Guns N Roses at the moment, along with her usual Kaiser Cheifs & Fall Out Boy.

My 12 year old girl loves 1970's Bowie :D

slight aside, does anyone know how much it costs to clear the debris between walls/how you would know? We can't get insulation without taking off bricks and having it cleared.

My friends have been quite creative with salespeople. One said he had no windows in his house, but they tried to sell him a door instead, as he had to get in somehow

Another disproved the faith of some Jehovah's witnesses by pointing out that statistically by their figures one of them wouldn't get into heaven
