just a bit of heartwarming news to impart....

Recommended Posts

as I've said, we're getting our 3 ex batts on sunday but then decided we had the room for 4 so mailed the coordinator and asked if we could have an extra one. She said she's already oversubscribed and has a waiting list in case of any no shows! While I'm a bit disappointed, isn't it brilliant that these girls are in such demand! Hope they all go to lovely homes.

I've been bombarding the coordinator with questions and photos, I'm just so excited about getting the girls

It does concern me though that they don't do any sort of home check, I mean, the hens could be going to the local takeaway for all they know. I don't suppose they have the resource to check people out which seems a shame.

Still, I'm sure most, if not all, go to good people.

You might still get your extra one though Poet - there are always 1 or 2 homers who don't turn up on the day

she said she has a waiting list for those that don't turn up, she's already said no

Oh come one... home checks??? I bought numbers of pets and gave them happy life, with tons of books and advise... adopted cats and someone came to do a homecheck... they were convinced i'd sell or eat or burn or curse the cat...

a friend of mine got refused at the same time for adopting a cat, but got approved for adopting a CHILD

it is not possible for people to home check everybody... and if they try it is not possible for them to do it in a thoroughly fair, balanced way... for goodness sake... there are too many chickens out there waiting for a new home, it might seem unfair to not do a home check, but if they home-checked everybody they might not re-home a fraction of the chooks they re-home now, to all the lovely caring people here who do so on these boards now, and all the people we never hear of anywhere else....

I am sorry of interfering with this, but my only concern is the animals' welfare and their wellbeing... and i know from being written off by cat's welfare people only because i have a baby, and adopting cats privately, that it is a very delicate balance... i have cats and chooks and rats and fish and we all live so happily together... if home -checks ruled i'd have none, cause my kids would obviously strangle the cats, drown the fish, pull the feahters of the chicks, and obviously died themselves of neglect...

the few people i met for home checks knew nothing of kids or pets... trust yourself... you did such great research and you have such great home ready for them and in any complication you know to ask for advise from all wonderful omlet people if needs arise... it's not about number and check, it's about how you feel and what you do... and honeslty so far you've done splendid...

Oh come on... home checks??? ...

I didn't think it was an unreasonable statement. When the RSPCA or cats protection rehome an animal that's already been thru trauma and stress, they make sure it goes to a good home- I just thought the BHWT did the same, that's all.

I'd hate to think of them going to bad homes but you make some good points. I find this board invaluable, you're full of such wisdom

daft to be refused a cat because you have children, how odd!

I think most centres don't like to rehome to families with children under 5 because some parents let their little angels torment the animals. Also if the animal has had a bad start in life it probably wants a peaceful home not one with marauding children. I don't think the BHWT hens would be very tasty just a bit tough so I think they're safe :)

The BHWT does ask lots of questions of the re-homers before allowing them to take home any hens. I am sure that Buffie will clarify this.

I don't think they asked us many questions at all, maybe she had a gut feeling we were good people :)

Since we got confirmation though I've e mailed her photos of the girls new home and info about where they'll live. I wanted her to know they'd be looked after well.

Home checks are carried out as required and yes the coordinators experience means they do use this to decide who is suitable to rehome:wink: Believe me some prospective rehomers are refused and you would have gone through a process and met a standard :)

Just to add to this conversation.

First of all I think Home-Checks would put prospective and genuine owners off adopting from the BHWT. Home-Checks are just too much hassle and they have put us off adopting from a local animal charities firstly because they want to inspect every inch of our home and secondly they want a donation bigger than the pet shop ask for a young, healthy new one. I don't want to go down that road though.

Regards extra hens, ask on the day. At our rescues we have a waiting list of people who want to take chooks, but after a long (6am-6pm is the norm), exhausting day the last thing the co-ordinators want to do is ring around seeing who would like 1 extra chicken, they would much rather it be gone so they can have an early night. If she hasn't got any extras put your name down for 2 on the rescue after.
