Due to get my Eglu for GPs next week and am wondering whether hay is adequate bedding for the winter. First time Eglu owner so not sure if they need anything else. Used masses of good quality hay in wooden hutch and they were fine. Want to get it right first time.

I don't know myself. I'm looking after my sister's guinea pig and wondered if hemocore would be OK because that's what I use with my chickens.

 

Just did a search and it appears you can use hemcore. I can't see why hay wouldn't be fine too though.

With our guinea pig we give him lots of sawdust and lots of hay aswell, he normally eats the hay. If you lock the eglu door it should be nice and warm for the gp anyway!

Thanks for the replies. Will go with the hay and see if they ask for anything else! I've also heard that you can put one of those pet microwavable heat pads in over the winter. Has anyone used these before?

Not sure about GPs but I know some people use them for their chickens!

They are designed for pets so i wouldn't see a problem using one.

Hay is for eating and helps their digestion. I'd stick to straw for bedding and Hemcore/Aubiose on the floor of the hutch. As Martin says, they don't like cold/damp, so need to be kept warm at night and especially in the winter, when they might need to be brought into a garage or conservatory.

Can you tell me where to get Hemcore as I haven't heard of it before. I was hoping that the Eglu would be warm enough for them outside over the winter as Omlet advertise it as warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I have owned GPs before but had a large wooden hutch with the bedroom packed with hay as well as hay for food and GP food and veggies etc.

You should be able to get Hemcore from horse type places
