hodge
Our Girls Amber and Ginger arrived in March this year and after a roughly 22 week wait have been laying reliably ever since with only the occasional day missed. Ginger is considerably bigger and bossier than Amber, but that is because she is a greedyguts and will shovel food down her neck all day long. Amber is more prim and proper and likes to pick at her food. We let them out for an hour a day generally under some supervision as they do tend to dig up plants in the borders, but they have never tried to escape. They have thier layers pellets in the morning but absolutely love corn on the cob, cauliflower and boiled rice, but were not very keen on raisins or birdseed which they said was common food for garden birds and definately not for them. Touch wood, we have had no problems with either of them, other than there eagerness to explore the house if the back door is left open. I dont suppose its possible to house train a hen? The Bantam of the Opera
omg chicken diapers, i cant work out if they are an inspiration or just cruel. Id love to have my chicken in the house but that dipaer looks so absurd! i would definately be mocked by my friends:( for good reason though. Jules.
glad you love your chooks mine won't touch birdseed either, & I bought them a huge sack of mixed corn/grain which neither they or the wild birds won't eat. I gave the sack to my parents who feed it to the geese which live in the orchard behind their house
Olly
Welcome to the forum Hodge - you have had your girls just a few weeks longer than me, and they are great aren't they. I was very worried when I started out, because a lot of the posts on here inevitably are about problems people have had, but like you (touch wood) my hens have been healthy, laid almost without a break, and generally fulfil the job description. It's good to hear some positive news! I have told mine in no uncertain terms that the kitchen is a chicken-free zone. I don't think house-training is an option, and I definitely don't want THAT on the kitchen floor!
hodge
Thanks for all your replies, I think that the girls will have to be banned from indoors then as we dont want any accidents on the kitchen floor and chicken nappies sound really stupid. Do we have to do anything different with them when it gets colder? I could get my wife to knit them some henny footwarmers and a scarf, but I suspect that having a feathery coat will be enough? I've over heard the girls clucking about wanting a radiator installed in the eglu along with underfloor heating, a gym and sauna with a heated outdoor sandpit in the run. I've told them they'll have to be laying a lot more eggs before that happens......

Guest
Mrs Hodge here..... Hodge forgot to mention that they have also been receiving lots of brochures for Hen Holidays to, for a bit of winter warmth. Some outfit called "Colonel Saunders Kentucky Hen Holidays" is offering Self-Catered breaks.... which they are quite interested in. They fancy Turkey, for Christmas. Looks like we will have to get them the sauna and and LCD TV for the Eglu, to keep them happy...... I bet Chris Evans isn't having this much trouble with his hens, he never mentions them on the radio anymore.....
Olly
I hear Colonel Saunder's place is pretty hot, and there are free breadcrumbs!
