BigChick
Hi everyone, This is my first time posting on the forum so hope this works. Ive had my light sussex for a few weeks now and think she maybe a cockerel because a couple of her tail feathers have started curling over and the feathers towards the bottom of her back and round her neck are pointy.Ive compared her to the hen and cockerel on the breeds page and to me she looks more like the cockerel.Ive ask a few friends what they think and "Ooops, word censored!"ody is sure so i thought id ask on here. Here are a couple of pics let me know what you think, thanks.
feemcg
I'm afraid it looks like it - with the tail feathers starting to droop like that and it looks like cockerels legs to me too. Was it sold to you as a girl? - if so you could return it.
bridgy chooks
Compared to our Maggi it looks like a boy. Not just the tail but the neck feathers seem longer in proportion to Maggi. Can you exchange 'him' for a 'her'?
BigChick
Im sure it wont be a problem to exchange him for a her as it was a guy at work whos friend owns a farm that gave me the light sussex and a barnevelder (who im sure is a girl) at the same time. thanks for your help. smudgley
I'm no expert, but from my recent experience of buying 6 young light sussex chicks, that were ALL cockerals, I think yours definitely looks like a cockeral.
Egluntyne
Yep...I'd say a cockerel too. Welcome to the forum.

Egluntyne
When s/he crows, you'll have your answer.
Guest
My light sussex chick has just reached POL and she looks identical to yours in every detail! So maybe there is some hope for you yet. Eglutine is right! The only time you will know for sure is when it either crows or lays an egg... Good luck!
chickencam
My Light Sussex is much rounder and fatter and one of the last bits to grow as she matured was her tail. So unfortunately you may be right
The Dogmother
I think it looks like a boy too - the hens feathers are more compact than that. One good way to tell is to look at the feathers on the back at the front base of the tail (if you get my drift); run your finger along the feathers against the grain and some will lift up so you can see whether they are pointed or rounded. You could either exchange now, or wait until 'it' (sorry) starts to crow, or not.
Jools
A boy I'm afraid - no doubt

The Dogmother
Rosie gave me a shock this morning when she said that she'd heard Chick crowing. Despite his Oedipal thing with his surrogate mum, he's no where ready to crow yet. It turned out to be Lavinia having a go because the others were trampling her in their haste to get out of the run She really does shout! smudgley
How old is he? Mine were all crowing at a young age.
