helenarees
Hello, Not sure of this is the correct place to post this message but - I've never had chickens before and was wondering if anyone could recommend a beginners book, preferably with a list of checks to make on your chickens with photos?? and how often to do these checks etc. Thanks Helena
Egluntyne
Hello. A good book for beginners is A Teach Yourself Book called Keeping Poultry By Victoria Roberts.

UkButton
There are a number of books in the Omlet shop they may be worth a look.

Tessa the Duchess
I have 'Keeping Pet Chickens' too, I think it is written by one of the Omlet people? I also have 'Keeping a Few Hens in your garden' by Francine Raymond which is quite informative, and I got 'Hen and the art of chicken maintenance' from the library, which is informative, quite funny and the guy who wrote it, can't recall his name, has so many chicken disasters I wonder why he continues to keep them. I get a lot of books online and have found The Book Depository to be very good and MUCH cheaper than Amazon and they have free world wide delivery. CatsCube
I have ordered Keeping pet chickens, along with the chicken encyclopedia from amazon for £13 incl shipping. Not arrived yet so cant comment if any good, but had good reviews and were cheap (cheaper when bought together) so even if not that usefull at least it wasnt a huge waste of money. Oh and apparently the Eglu is featured in the 'Keeping Pet chickens' one.
Guest
www.abebooks.co.uk are usually cheaper than amazon but it's worth checking both and of course, your local library is free- even better!
helenarees
thanks for your replies, I've looked for the books mentioned on all the sites and also on the omlet bookshop, there's not much difference in price, so think I'll get from omlet when I'm ordering my 2nd set of perches for my new cube (arriving next Wednesday). I'm both very excited and nervous waiting for my ex battery hens arriving 7th November. Helena
kissinuk
I read the Omlet book (in Waterstones!) and it seems good, lots of pictures. I also own The Right Way To Keep Chickens it's a little old fashioned but does have a lot of good advice (it even mentions the Eglu!).
