craftyhunnypie
Hi - I'm after a bit of help in choosing some bantams for my mk2 eglu. The girls are all going in with each other Wednesday evening, just before bedtime (in the cube). If all goes well, then my eglu will be ready for my bantams. We have decided to get the Omlet recommended 5 bantams, but we'd like 5 different ones. I definitely want a pekin, but unsure of what else. What could you recommend & where from. We are in Cheshire, but don't mind a little journey as long as not too far. So far, we are thinking of the Wernlas, but they are a bit pricey - especially with want 5 at once!! We also quite like the Seabrights. Please help, as we'd like some nice loking friendly bantams! If you could give an indiacation of egg colour too - that would be great! Not asking much am I??? Thanks Emma.x

Janty
My Buff Orpington bantam is lovely. She is very friendly and looks after the pekins so well. I'd recommend an Orpington bantam anyday.
Cinnamon
I have a pekin, 2 Polands (mad & scatty, but adorable & easy to catch as they cannot see you coming) a Barbu D'Uccle & a Barbu D'Anver. The 2 little Barbus are so sweet, & ting still, as they are only babies. The Pekin is top bird....we call her thug as she walks like a prizefighter & has heaps of attitude There are some photos in my gallery
The Dogmother
Now here's a subject close to my heart... choosing bantams. I've got a couple of Pekins - brilliant personalities, but go broody a lot, so not many eggs. No garden is complete without them. My faves have to be Wyandottes though - a good all round bird with that lovely rounded shape that hens should have; they lay well for pure breeds and don't have any leg feathers to get mucky. Currently I have wyandottes in the following flavours: Silver laced, silver pencilled, buff columbian. I will get more when I have any losses. Silver sussex have adivine colouring and are on my wish list. True bantams like the Japanese and Dutch are lovely little fragile things, very pretty, but don't rely on them for eggs or robust health. Araucanas are lovely, dotty temperament but robust health and lovely blue eggs too. they tend to make a silly noise though - no gentle clucking for them ; they make a rusty gate noise... or is it just mine that does that? I can rcommend a couple of breeders in the newbury/reading area if your interested.
CatsCube
Funny you say that about the Arucanas noice, cause my arucana hybrid makes the same noice, not pretty is it. Good suggestions though, and I love my Miniture , so fluffy! How about a little Silkie too? they are winter egg layers, so you mat get some eggs from then when your other banties have stopped, thry go very broody after laying around 12 eggs though, so you will want to dunk them in some cold water. The Dogmother
A friend of mine uses silkies as broodies, but they're never off the nest as they love to hatch. As a consequence, they get rather hot and tend to have lice
Cinnamon
I had a Silkie too, & it (never found out if it was male of female) was plagued by ear problems, & eventually died from them. They are prone as a breed, apparantly. I am with Claret on Wyandottes- they are so gorgeous! Poland are my favourites though - mad as a bag of snakes both of mine are
Tweety
I have 4 bantams, all of which came from Wernlas: 1 Speckled Sussex, 1 Buff Rock, 1 gold Sebright and 1 silver Sebright. They are all gorgeous and real characters, but the Sebrights are very special. They never stop talking and everyone who sees them falls in love with them. However, none of the my bantams are very people friendly at the moment, although hopefully this will change when they start laying. I would definitely recommend a visit to Wernlas, and just see which ones take your fancy when you get there.
The Dogmother
I love Sebrights too - they have such lovely big dark eyes.
ali-s
I would recomend a Plymouth Rock Bantam. Bubbles is buff coloured, she is soft and cuddly and round She lays a decent sized egg and she has never been broody. Freckle my Poland is bonkers She bumps into things as her crest obscures her vision. she is always on the go and so funny to watch. Freckle loves her food and spent 3 days sitting in the halloween pumkin eating it from the inside out. She should lay white eggs when she is old enough. Cinnamon
My white Poland Floss is a really good layer, & for a Bantam her eggs are a good size too - sort of small hen sized as opposed to quail sized like the ones the Pekin produces She lays nearly every day & her eggs are white. The Dogmother
As we're onto the size thing; my wyandottes lay eggs between 34 and 51g depending on the maturity of the hen. My Poland/araucana cross lays blue eggs about 51-57g, they taste creamier too.
