Ain't Nobody Here
Got my electricity meter yesterday . I've set it up but haven't quite got to grips with the display - it seems to fluctuate pretty wildly so will have to watch it to work out our proper usage. abwsco
ANH, mine fluctuates quite a lot but I've noticed it's when the washer, kettle etc are on. I even caught it with a 0.00p reading briefly yesterday. The fridge cycle must have been off.
Olly
wow - I've never got mine below 0.16! I must try harder. ANH - not sure if yours is an Owl Meter or a different one - but there are two settings, on one it updates constantly and on the other it only updates every minute, or maybe two minutes. Might be worth checking which setting you have it on.
Guest
Mine is reading 0.14 at the moment (10:45am) but I don't think we've got anything on except fridge and freezer and a light.
Ain't Nobody Here
Still trying to get to grips with mine . Which reading are you talking about - 0.14p per day? Mine's showing roughly £1 a day just now, with just the hot water and the pc on.
Guest
It's not so easy to compare is it? Mine is usually 1.7p per minute with just the basic on, but that depends on how much your electricity costs. I also have kW being used, which would seem to me to be an absolute measurement which we should be able to compare. This morning I was using 0.14. This afternoon I am using 0.23kW which I reckon is costing me about 3.5p per minute. We have set ours at 15.2p per kWh Is there a 'per day' setting? I like knowing that it is 20.7 degrees in my house, with the patio door open, but I am surprised to learn I have 68% humidity (sometimes higher) I'm sure we can work out a setting which we can use to compare usage levels. I think it would be good to be able to compare usage across 'normal' homes.
Ain't Nobody Here
This is the monitor I have: Mine's showing: Energy now 342 watts Cost per month £22 / Cost per day 74p (they alternate) So your per minute cost, Ginette, works out as a daily rate of £24.48 (if my maths is right ), much the same as mine. Guest
hmmm. . . sorry . . . when I said cost per minute, I meant per hour. I think you meant cost per month, not day. I can't afford £24 a day!! I think we'll work it out if we keep talking!
Ain't Nobody Here
Oops, sorry, quite right . Although I'm horrified to see that when my kettle's on, that is just about my daily rate . I had my oven on briefly too this morning and my monthly rate was nearly £300 . No more coffee or cooking for me . I'm off to check out those stand-by device energy saving plugs now . Anyone else use those?
Helly Welly
I do. We really got them because they are remote control which means i no longer have to bend to switch on the computer plug etc. We were already turning everything off at the plug, but bending down often hurts my hips so these remotes have certainly made life easier. They are ever so easy to set up and i wouldn't be without them now. We got ours from Costco but i saw the same ones on Currys the other weekend. Ain't Nobody Here
I'm confused (doesn't take much ). Anyone answer these questions for me? When I switch off my PC, I turn off the monitor, speakers & printer too. So they're not in standby, right? So is there any point in getting one of these standby plugs? Does leaving the switch on the wall "on" use a significant amount of power? Is it a good idea to switch the modem etc completely off or would powering it up every time cause problems? Regarding the TV, if I got a standby plug for that, the V+ box would have to reboot every time and the video would need resetting everytime too, wouldn't it? Helly Welly
We don't switch off the Freeview box because any udates to it come overnight. Anything plugged in will still suck up electricity although the amount is obvously negligible. We switch off our modem with no problems. ANH, not sure about the v+ box as we don't have one but items which need to be on all the time eg video recorder go into a special plug in the run of plugs on the standby saver. We got one for the TV and freeview box in our bedroom as we can't switch them off at the sockets so I think it's a great idea for electrical safety if nothing else. Ours was free so was even better -lol Think they're £19.99 at Argos. I'm going to get one for our daughters room as I'm fed up of them leaving stero, tv, dvd etc plugged in and on standby as they can't be boteherd switching off at the plugs.
