I was just looking on the BHWT website and came across a link for chicken houses and have just read that if you put water with layers mash then it goes sour if it's left. I didn't know that

 

This is what was written "feed layers mash dry. Because it's called mash, you do not add water to create that mashed potato look. Water soon turns the mash sour and the hens won't eat it, besides they eat dry bits and pieces they find while scratching, it's normal".

Yep - layers mash if it's got wet goes off and smells awful.

 

The only time the girls get it "wet" is in a small bowl at the end of the day, with some warm water and a few raisins added - it's gone in sixty seconds!

I had to ask that question before we got our hens as the term 'mash' made me unsure whether to feed wet or dry.

 

Also, I thought the 'layers' bit meant you spread it out in layers or that it came in layers (like a cake!)

 

That was many moons ago when I was a green and wet behind the ears chicken keeper, now I am a total authority! And if you believe that, go and mix some water with your mash!

I though the word "layers" was a brand name and kept wondering why folk didn't use a capital "L"!!

that would be pellets! Unless you're examining the grains under a microscope and then I think you would find the surface quite uneven and not cylindrical at all

as long as the chooks eat them, continue to enjoy life and lay eggs (or not if they dont want to )

 

they are still painful when you stand on them with no shoes on

I thought there was something wrong with my mash when I opened the bag - it was all dry and powdery, didn't look a bit like muesli! (and I also couldn't figure out what 'layers' meant at first )

Mine prefer eating layers mash with a little warm water added first thing in the morning .

Mine have pellets on an adlib basis but I throw them a scoopful of layers mash so that it is more interestng in the run for them to scratch around in whilst they are confined.
