Janty
No eggs, girls confined to run, too cold to sit and watch them. What a horrible time. I can't even get on with landscaping around the cube run as I'm waiting for the last extention to arrive to complete the goods train look. My lavender pekin came over for a snuggle today and then spent the next ten minutes 'shouting' at me because I wouldn't let her stay out. Anybody else feeling miserable and lousy? xScrunchee
Could be SAD. Do you feel gloomy most autumn/winters? I have got a light box for SAD and am feeling much happier and more positive each day compared to last year.
Janty
No...usually I love this time of year.
xScrunchee
Wouldn't pay out for a SAD lightbox then! Although some people have been saying that this winter is tougher for people in general as we didn't really have much of a summer-so maybe I love the cold weather, stews, casseroles and frosty mornings

Westie
HI Have let the girls out for a run around but they are drench so put them back to bed with a big cover over them - they hate it, I hate it, the dog hates it and I'm now going to get on with the grotty jobs I haven't got done becauseof playing with the chucks. Freedom. Westie
Olly
No eggs, girls confined to run, too cold to sit and watch them. Anybody else feeling miserable and lousy? Nope! Am going to wrap up warmly, and go and rake leaves while the girls have an hour or so free-ranging - I won't be cold, I'll stop feeling guilty about them being confined, and the garden will look tidier. That's a win-win situation And when I come back indoors, instead of feeling slightly chilly as it does at the moment, it will feel really toasty! I walk round a centrally heated house wearing 2 jumpers, scarf and hat I lived in Canada for 3 years where the winter temps are regularly -20 BUT it is a different kind of cold, snow everywhere, blue skies, bright sunshine, it's the damp cold that we get here which really seems to get into your bones Tessa
superjules
I'm feeling a bit sorry for myself because I've been too busy arranging the School Xmas fair to finish off my big walk-in run (and the weather has been too cold!). All I managed to do last week was attach the weldmesh to 3 of the 4 panels. Still to do: put the weld mesh on the last panel and the door, attach the chicken wire to the top half of all 4 panels, put the panels together, reinforce the corners, attach the door I'm going to the talk at Thornes in an hour so I'll see loads of lovely chooks I could have bought if I had pulled my finger out, braved the cold and got it done! Ho hum! Still, I have some free time tomorrow so will crack on with it then, whatever the weather!
AJuff
Not too miserable! It makes me appreciate weekends more when I can be in daylight. It's nice to see the hens out during the day and I love being indoors baking and cooking, playing games with the kids and having the glow of a lovely fire. Janty
Forgot to say before but we are in Suffolk...so no free-ranging. I love the garden, soups, stews, winter walks, etc. I don't suffer from SAD, I like this time of year usually but I do hate having my girls stuck inside their run without snuggles. Boo hoo! Can't wait until this bird flu thing passes.
Olly
Oh, sorry Janty - didn't realise you were affected by that, I would be very fed up if I couldn't let mine out at weekends, they don't get any during the week at this time of year. I wouldn't get half as much gardening done without them, as there is no way otherwise that I'd have been tempted to go out on a day like today! Here's hoping the restrictions are soon lifted. Janty
I have taken action this afternoon. Made my girls a nice pan of roasted pumpkin soup to make up for their confinement...they love it mixed with porridge oats (wierd, I know but who knows what goes on inside the mind and taste buds of a chicken). I finally put the top coat of plastikote on their green roosting bars. I then walked to B&Q to buy some more khaki plastikote so that I could paint the mezzanine level that I built for the cube and finally, I built a perching unit for my bantams.
