Cinnamon
Live is too short to make Batter
Mrs Frugal
Sarah!! If I can make batter, anyone can!! I use an economical recipe from an old 1930s cookbook which never fails for either toad in the hole or yorkshire puds. 4oz plain flour 1 egg 1/2 pint milk Make sure that your oil is nice and hot in the tin you're using and it shouldn't stick and also make sure that the oven temperature is hot enough to cook it all the way though. I've had soggy batter before when I've forgotten to put the temperature up.
Cinnamon
I Know, I know I have made it before, but then I always seem to have no flour..... So I keep a pack in the cupboard & it works really well I am not usually into conveniences like this - honest
Mrs Frugal
Don't worry about it Sarah. My Mum has bought Aunt Bessie's in the past !
Cinnamon
We had some at my Dads last weekend - they were suprisingly good - in fact I praised him on his baking skills THEN saw the packet on the side
Mrs Frugal
I know! They are rather nice, aren't they and brilliant if you're struggling with Christmas Dinner so I did let Mum off but it's a standing joke with us now!!

Guest
Chunkin- get a really good non stick or emamel baking tray. They are expensive, but they are worth every penny I always use packet batter mix And I add a chopped red onion about 5 mins before I put the batter mix in - it always comes out a treat Actually - I agree with Sarah on this. At least with a packet mix you are virtually guaranteed success. It's better than having all toad and no hole. (Apologies to all you purists.... )
Chunkin
Thank you all for your advice! Looks like toad-in-the-hole will be on our menu this week Will try Kate's recipe first (and make sure I'm using my best dish/hot oil etc) and if I still stuff it up it'll be packet mix next time We can get really good sausages from a farm close by and it's easy to make a veggie alternative Getting hungry now... Mrs Frugal
(Apologies to all you purists.... ) I'm not a purist ! I just find it's cheaper to do it myself. Just call me CheapsKate! Years ago, I used to buy mixes for things until I realised I could do it myself at a fraction of the cost! It's also more fun and yes, I do have disasters! Quite a lot ! Guest
It's also more fun and yes, I do have disasters! Quite a lot ! I don't believe that Kate! I have this image of you hurrying round a kitchen throwing things into various bowls, juggling eggs, managing three ovens and having everything turn out perfect. Mrs Frugal
My kitchen's only big enough for one oven and I don't even have a microwave!! The hurrying and juggling's about right but things do come out of the oven looking nothing like they did in the recipe book though sometimes ! Poached Egg Paul
Hello, I was thinking about getting this book but I do not have any children. Does anyone recommend it still? I really like river cottage, is this book especially for children cooking or would it be ok for me as well? Thanks Paul.
Mrs Frugal
Yes, definitely Paul. It's a good basic book with clear instructions for all the essential things you need to be able to cook plus some interesting and tasty recipes too. I love the book and use it a lot even though I've been cooking for years . It's nice to look at too - it's quite unlike all the other River Cottage books in layout. Guest
I think what Kate's implying here is that it's a good book for us blokes. Y'know, basic cooking, clear instructions, nice pictures - she just dressed it up a bit that's all. You'll find a lot of this type of female chauvinism on here!
