Guest
if they do come back, make a fuss and thank them effusively and maybe ask that if you forget again could they come into your back garden and get the bin for you? You never know, it might work and I bet a Christmas tip would help! If they do come back then that's really good as I bet many councils would just say "tough!" The Dogmother
You'll be lucky, I used to live near chickenlover and the council there aren't very helpful Ours occasionally forget to collect people's bins, but a quick call to the council and they send out a lorry to sort it out. Guest
i remember when i was a kid and the bin men used to come into the garden, collect the bin, empty it and bring it back to the garden. Got my nostalgic, rose tinted specs on I expect
BeckyBoo
whilst we're on the subject of bins, we don't get a bin only black bags (which is really nice in the summer - not) Anyway, we stack ours in a storage shed, one of those £89 from Argos jobs, and if I ever forget to do them, which has been known our bin men go to the cupboard empty it and close it up again. Once when someone elses bin bag split they came and asked for a broom and swept it all up! (mind you, I think it's an AWFUL job so in the summer last eyar when we had that REALLY hot weather I used to leave them out an ice cold 2ltr bottle of lemonade, at Christmas they get a slab of beer. I know they get paid but ours are great, and they're cheerful, even the bloke with so many piercings I think his head must leak and his brains will get wet in the rain!! Jules.
i remember when i was a kid and the bin men used to come into the garden, collect the bin, empty it and bring it back to the garden. Got my nostalgic, rose tinted specs on I expect I remember that to. They used to hoist the bin up onto their backs. Then we all got wheelie bins... We still had round bins in St Helens back in 1994-5 when we first got our house. They used to say on the lid "no hot ash"- it's only since my parents had their coal fire put back in that I now know what that means. Egluntyne
I remembered at 7.30am and did the pyjama sprint. Got soaked. I only put it out about once a month, but it was full, so I would have been furious if I'd forgotten.
ali-s
Our bin men are great they will take away the household rubbish even if the bin is too full and the lid is up Take extra cardboard that will not fit in the blue crate and have collected the bin from the back garden if I have forgotten to put it out The secret is a crate of beer at christmas Wrapped with a tag and a bow

chickenlover
well ive got four kids and have 2 wheelie bins that are full, im really annoyed because i only started putting them round the side of the house a couple of weeks ago when one of the kids had put food in them and we got over run by maggots, that was the worse night of my life by the way, they kept trying to come in the front door, hubbie wasnt here and the kids were kicking off while i was in wellies and rubber gloves fighting my own war with about a million maggots. When the bins were by the front door if i forgot the bin men would actually come in and get them, i suppose because they were all the way round the side they didnt bother
Egluntyne
The po faced lot at Sheffield City Council have banned tips. Our bin men are good sorts. What the eye doesn't see and all that!
Jules.
Hmm once neither of us put the bin out for it's special in-between Christmas & New Year collection- we had loads of rubbish. i once got rid of an old kitchen slowly over a few months in my wheelie bin- we had bits of cupboard stacked in the garden for ages. Saved me going to the tip with it all ( it was wrecked- no one would have wanted it). My current kitchen- the one that replaced the wrecked one- was from my parent's next door neighbour- it was only a few years old & they were replacing it. They had left it out in their garden & we cheekily asked for it- that was 5 years ago now, & hopefully in the next 12 months we will get a new kitchen with the work being done on the house. Guest
Oh poet you are naughty..........but its a good idea it's dark, get going! **edit** spread it around and try and choose a couple with no kids, they won't have much rubbish so will have the space- I've thought this thru! Couperman
Ours are only collected fortnightly so it was a problem if we forgot. I acquired another wheelie bin from my mate on the council. We don't put that much in them now but if we forget to put the bin out we just fill the other one, it gets a bit pongy in the summer though having one festering for a month. Kev. Guest
there's only the 2 of us but since we started recycling and composting we've gone from about 2-3 bin bags a week to 1 a week, sometimes even less! get recycling kids!
chickenlover
yeah ours are only collected fortnightly aswell, if hubby refuses to put it in his car, im going to be over run with rubbish come next fortnight
The Dogmother
We're on fortnightly collections too, but there's never much in it. Kev I use Stalosan (really for the eglu) to keep my bin pong-free - works like a dream.
Olly
Gosh that's a brilliant idea Kate, I keep meaning to get some Stalosan! My bin is only emptied fortnightly at this time of year, although I usually only have one bag in it. Unfortunately at the moment it contains several dead mice - the cat has an uncanny knack of starting to slaughter things the day after the bin has been emptied, so there's a two week wait before it's emptied! The Dogmother
There's a local company that comes round (follows the bin collectors) and jetwashes and deodorises your bin for a small amount - it's cheap enough for me to get them to do it once a month, then I leave it to dry and sprinkle with Stalosan. I've got loads of dead mice in mine too Olly
Blackrocksrock
There is a benefit to living in the country - the dead mice and voles get lobbed into the field behind the house - they prob came from there anyway! We also recycle and although we get a weekly collection I only have 1 bag as now there are just derby and joan left in the house.
The Dogmother
I used to lob them out too Susan, but then the cats would recycle them and bring the darned things back in!
