Kim Horden
We are going away this Saturday for three weeks over Christmas and need to take the chickens with us (no babysitters available!). We're house/animal sitting on a small holding in Anglesey which is about 4 - 5 hour drive. Any advice on the best way for the girls to travel without getting too stressed out? Guest
In a box (with suitable breathing holes). In the dark they will be calm and think it's bedtime. Not sure if you will need to offer them food and water half-way How lovely to take your girls on holiday with you!
Egluntyne
Put them into cardboard boxes with airholes punched in, with newspaper and bedding in the bottom. They will go into roosting mode after a short time. When you arrive at your destination.....try to make sure they have immediate access to water and food. Have a good journey. Ain't Nobody Here
Maybe you could put a roosting bar from the eglu/cube in the box too. Then they'd feel right at home .
Janty
I have sent you a pm with another possible solution. We are not too far away up the A12 and could hen sit for you.
Snowy
Or try travelling at night so they'll be in roost mode anyway!
Kim Horden
Thanks for the advice. Think we will leave very early so it will still be dark so hopefully the girls will sleep the whole way, and we'll avoid the traffic! Just another thing, where we're staying already has chickens and lots of open fields and other animals. Our girls have a pen set up to stay in to keep them separated to begin with and we are going to make them a separte run so they can have a bit of freedom. They are used to free ranging in our garden and we don't like the idea of keeping them locked up but do you think they'd wander off and get lost or attacked if we did let them free range after they'ld got used to new place? Also as it's only for a few weeks do you think it's just best to restrict them and then at least we know they'd be safe? We were just going to see how it goes when we get there but any advice would be great as we are quite new to this.
Egluntyne
I wouldn't let them free range in a new place full of uncertainties and with which you are unfamiliar. Best to be on the safe side.
