Guest
Louise I am so pleased for you. That is so good. I am envious too because I just can't make it work with this water in the south-east. Even with 'natural' shampoo I have to valiantly struggle through to 7 days when really my hair needs washing after 5, just the same as it always did. Omletina Kyckling
I'm intrigued - do you peeps who are doing the no shampoo route dye your hair?
Guest
I do. I have found a product called Naturtint which is less chemical than the high street products. Having gone without shampoo for almost a year, the organic and more natural shampoos worked really well on me - and not on my daughters who hadn't given up the SLS shampoo. So it was still worth the ordeal!
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm nearly at a year too . I don't really get greasy hair as it's very dry and tends to frizz. It's better than it was though and since getting it cut shorter, I'm not having to use my straighteners at all!
Louise
Regular hair dye is too strong for the no poo methods as your hair doesn't have all of the silicone coating you get from regular shampoos so the hair absorbs far more dye as a couple of people found out way back in the beginning of this I don't dye my hair - I am going grey the I can live with it so the world have too as well
Guest
That was me Louise - a regular Goth when it was meant to be medium brown! I have since used half a packet which has worked really well (I have long thick hair). The last one however was a bit different with no ammonia and no something else, even kinder to my hair. i used the whole lot and it worked fine - no awful black-haired apparition this time! Snowy
I wondered how you got on with dyes. I can't do the 'no 'poo' - my hair is too short, but I have gone over to the SLS free 'poo. I've just recoloured my hair this evening - but as it is more of a colour stripper I assume it won't be as drastic? (she says, sat with towel on head, haven't even checked the colour in the mirror yet!) Also, how do you get on with SLS free shampoo if you swim regularly? I'm using the Jason apricot shampoo and a Weleda conditioner, but my hair feels like straw at the moment (feels ok at the moment because of the post dye intensive conditioner!) Lesley
I swim every week Snowy and use SLS free poo - no problems at all. Perhaps it's just my hair type as I never need to use conditioner either

Ain't Nobody Here
I can't do the 'no 'poo' - my hair is too short, Why do you think your hair's too short for no 'poo? I had mine cut even shorter yesterday and it's even easier with no 'poo!
Lesley
Short fine hair goes greasy so quickly and then stays looking like that whilst it sorts itself out I didn't get far for that reason Was your hair short when you started?
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh right, I see! My hair was just above shoulder length when I started - it's now shorter than it's been for years. I shake my head and nothing moves (above the neck anyway ). My hair is less greasy when it's short so no 'poo is a breeze . The only advantage of dry hair! The Dogmother
Snowy, I colour my hair too (because it's virtually white without!) and find that the peroxide used in most hair colours makes it dryer than normal. I use SLS-free shampoo (either Faith in Nature or Aveda - latter if my friend gets it cheap for me) and an intensive conditioner every time. It works well for me, but then I don't go swimming as often as you do, you may find that the chlorine will dry it out even more. My hair is like yours, shortish, thick and fine strands. I daresay that it would be in better condition if I didn't colour it, but I don't feel grown up enough to have white hair just yet! One thing to note is that I tried Jason 'poos and found them to be quite drying
Snowy
Thanks all! I realise my post was a bit confusing, but I think I am confused about my hair! It's very fine and soft, but there is a lot of it so it looks really thick. Without colouring it is actually unmanageably greasy, so colouring ususally leaves it nice and soft. With SLS shampoo I could wash and condition it daily (using shampoo for frequent use) and it was great, but I've never been able to use any styling products, or shampoo for dry hair as it just goes limp and greasy again straight away. I'm trying to wash it less often and use the SLS free 'poo, but it doesn't seem to clean it very well - it does degrease it, but it feels very straw like and never regains it's bounce, so I'm not sure whether it has been overcleansed, or not cleansed enough!! When I had it a bit longer I did try less washing and it coped very well with just the occasional SLS free shampoo. Oh well, I'll persevere - maybe I do need a less drying shampoo next time - wish they did trial sizes! I can't not colour it as it is badger striped iron grey and makes me look about 100! Now I'm not really vain, but that is a bit extreme even for me!
Omletina Kyckling
I've tried various SLS free shampoos and don't like most of them - my hair is long and curly and I have found problems getting it clean with them. I also have psoriasis, which doesn't seem to like most things I put on it. I tried the Naked shampoos and didn't like them at all (and they are quite pricey) I now use Superdrug's own brand Organic shampoos which are SLS free and really well priced. They use coconut oil in them as the foaming bit and it seems to foam like a normal shampoo. I've been using the one for coloured hair and it's great. You've seen my hair, long, curly and mad, and it seems to get on well with this stuff. I think it's only about £1.90 a bottle too, so even better!! The Dogmother
Snowy, if you ever want to sample a Faith in Nature s'poo, then send me a little plastic bottle and I'll fill it up for you. Rosie adores them and uses the s'poo in the shower to wash her hair and body with.
Snowy
Thanks for that both of you! I'll have a look out for the superdrug one first - that appeals as I love coconut and its cheap! If I don't get on with it, I'll take you up on your offer Clare.
Omletina Kyckling
Thanks for that both of you! I'll have a look out for the superdrug one first - that appeals as I love coconut and its cheap! If I don't get on with it, I'll take you up on your offer Clare. Hi Snowy, I hope you won't be disappointed, it's not coconutty, but it says it uses coconut as a form of foaming agent! I used the Naked one yesterday and my hair already feels like it needs a wash! I must try the Faith in Nature ones next I think....
The Dogmother
I don't like the Naked ones either Omletina - I'm a product tester for them and have told them what I think. I recently tested a new sensitive hair range for them; it smelled divine (orange blossom) but left my hair feeling like straw!

pelicano
It has been ages since I updated. It has been 11 months since I first started the experiment, and I have tried so many different things during that time! What I find works for me now is washing my hair water only most days, and putting a little apricot oil on for condition. Then once a week loading my hair up with apricot oil for an hour or more, then shampooing, then lime juice to re-acidify, then rinse. I never thought I'd do without conditioner, but I find the oil works about as well, and doesn't play havoc with my scalp. I feel like I'm getting the best of both worlds this way - I don't get the waxy build up, but I'm still able to condition my hair in the way it needs it (plenty of oil), and without over-using shampoo. It's difficult to tell whether my hair is in better condition, as it's longer than it has been for years (so maybe the answer is yes then!) pelicano
Ooh I'm excited! After falling off the sans shampoo waggon, I've tried a few things out, and I've found the mildest shampoo ever! This is it (hope the link works): http://www.soorganic.com/product.php?productid=1145&cat=161&page=1 All I do now is wash with that, then use lime juice to acidify (then rinse), and I don't need any conditioner or oil afterwards (considering how dry my hair is, that is some achievement). My hair looks better than it ever has, including when I wasn't using shampoo.
