Sans Shampoo haircare

Recommended Posts

I am sticking with natural shampoo - either Faith in Nature or Green People. I think it is over 3 years since I used 'normal' shampoo. My hair gets dirty after 5 days, when it used to be 3, but it doesn't really get worse after that so I can go 2 weeks if I want to, but usually it's 7 days between shampoos. The natural shampoo makes my hair look really clean now and I love my 'after-wash' hair.

What I have noticed recently is that I no longer have the dry and terribly split ends. It is about 3 months since I had my hair cut and the ends are still OK. I am absolutely certain that that is the result of this regime. Most of my hair hasn't used 'normal' shampoo at all now and it is much nicer and healthier. :D:D For that I am delighted! :D:D

I stuck it for about 6 months I think, and then went onto using Faith in Nature or Aveda (when I friend can get it on discount) and wash only twice aweek. I find my hair is much better than it used to be.

Rosie used to use water only for about a year or more, but as she got older and her hair got more oily, she has needed to use the SLS free shampoos too and her hair is in marvellous condition.

It's great to hear of the success stories. It just goes to show how different we all are and how one size doesn't fit all.

For me, my oil production cut right down without the shampoo, as you'd expect. But, in some ways, that seemed counter-productive, as my hair was dry and needed the oil. I don't really understand it, but it certainly didn't help my hair's condition (although it didn't make it worse), and did even less for my scalp.

Sorry to say but I have a feeling you are disillusioning yourselves about this 'natural' shampoo. What EXACTLY is in the Faith in Nature/ Green People/Aveda products? (can someone let me know?)

I bet it's not all 'natural' and there must be some soap or detergent in it to clean the hair - which is exactly what the hair doesn't need. The whole idea is that it should balance itself with its own oils. By using these products you are perpetuating the need to use them if you see what I mean.

Don't mean to sound a smug about this but I think shampoo is shampoo, whether it is a mild one with nice herbs in it or a 'normal' one with a concoction of chemicals and additives.

I use them because they don't contain SLS, which irritates my scalp. They are fine for me.

Each person is different and is interpreting and learning from this experiment in their own way, ending up with what suits them and their lifestyles.

Yes, of course, Clare. I didn't mean to imply that mine was the only way for hair - only pointing out that this thread is called "Sans shampoo"...

Right, but we've all of us tried no shampoo, and are now finding what suits us best personally. I think it's totally relevant/interesting to see what happened at the end of people's experiments into the world of no shampoo. It was certainly an interesting one for me! :)

Merryn, as I thought you knew I struggled for 10 months without shampoo at all. I think that was like going 'cold turkey'. But my hair never got to the nice state that I had expected. I was part of the first group to try the method back in early 2006. We had varied success from less than a week to complete conversion.

I have learnt that those with frizzy hair seem to manage very well with just hot water. Those who have spring water in their taps manage too. (In fact when I was in Pembrokeshire one summer, I too found spring water wonderful.) I think those in soft water areas also cope better without shampoo.

Here in Surrey we have very hard water with added fluoride. I am convinced that this makes 'sans shampoo' impossible.

I would be very surprised to find that Green People shampoo has synthetic chemicals in it. I know less about Faith in Nature, but everything looks all right on the ingredients list. There is definitely no SLS and no SLES in either of these. I don't think I'm being fooled by these products. I am very pleased, as I said recently, with my softer, younger-looking and less dried up hair.

I think this thread is all about the 'sans shampoo' experiment, not just for those who were completely successful. As I have tried to indicate above, being completely without shampoo remains for some an unachievable ideal.

You are quite right, Ginette and I stand corrected.

I am very lucky to live in a soft water area and I'm sure this and the fact I have co"Ooops, word censored!", prone to frizzy, hair is why I have been able to dispense with shampoo entirely.

Merryn, I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to correct you. I like discussion and we can't really have that without expressing our opinions.

One day I hope to have my own spring water and dispense completely with shampoo.:pray::D The dream is still there!

That would be lovely, wouldn't it? :)

I probably won't update this thread again, since I'm now so far away from no shampoo, but I will just say one more thing: as of today, I'm actually starting to think my hair is actually feeling healthier/stronger from using a tiny bit of very mild shampoo every day (plus the shea butter and coconut oil). Now that I didn't expect.

The shampoo I'm using is the one I've mentioned somewhere else in this thread:

 Well done to Merryn, it's been an amazing experiment and I think you must be the only member left who is Sans Shampoo!

Louise might be, and hers did look better for it (unlike mine which looked unwashed) but she sadly doesn't have access to the forum now.

My experience is very similar to Ginette's. I did about 14 months, and have had over 2 further years with non SLS shampoos. Local water is also rubbish for hair, but great for tea! :D

I can see & feel in my hair the point at which I stopped using SLS shampoo!

Sadly, my hair grows very slowly, only about an inch a year. Which means below the ears is split & ratty. I wish it would grow faster, I'd love to be rid of the pre experiment hair, it's dreadful.

But the top bit is fab!

Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer me advice!

I've wanted to go sans shampoo for a while now, but really didn't have the patience to do it!

I've actually just finished chemotherapy, and my hair has gone very thin.

I will be having a stem cell transplant soon, and my hair will totally fall out.

I thought that when it starts to grow back might be a good time to start going without shampoo, as it will be very short to start with, so won't be quite so noticable when it's greasy!

Do you think it will work, or will it not be as effective because it'll be so short to start with?

Thanks!

I'm really sorry to hear you've been ill :( . I hope things are getting better for you  .

I wouldn't think it would make any difference how short your hair is and it might actually benefit your hair not having unnecessary chemicals on it (although I appreciate you've obviously been overloaded with chemicals already :( ).

I'm doing ok, they finished my chemo 2 sessions early cos I was responding well :)

Thats what I thought about the chemicals - I will have had so many in me, and they recommend not to use anything too strong, or hairdye etc.

So I thought this may be the best/easiest time!

It's a couple of months away yet, as i'll be in hospital for about a month having the sem cell transplant, so once it's growing back, I will let you know how it goes!

One thing I've heard is good for this sort of situation is a satin pillow case, as it protects the thin/fine hair and stops it from breaking from all the movement while you sleep. I've got a satin slip that I hadn't worn since my wedding day on my pillowcase!:lol:

My OH has quite fine/thin hair, and he finds the less he shampoos the thicker the hair feels, if that helps at all.

Ohh, I didn't know that!

Thanks for the tip :D
