I read somewhere that a couple of ping pong balls in the Glug will stop the water freezing.

 

Can't remember where, but will give it a try.

I've got a practice golf ball and a (squashed ) ping pong ball at the ready. It's not been freezing since I dug them out so am still waiting to see if it works.

 

(I bring the glug in at night anyway so it'd have to be pretty darn cold during the day - which it was a week or so ago.)

Why not just use a choccy tin with a candle in it.

A couple of vent holes in the side of the tin and that should do the trick.

I bought 6 from ebay for about a £1. They work down to a certain temperatue, then the glug froze. However, the girls pecked the ball and broke up the ice.

 

One day I forgot to defrost the glugs are they pecked holes in the ice to drink!

(Bad chicken owner that I am)!

 

I think it works by the wind blowing the ball over the surface of the water, preventing freezing.

My late mil used to keep a football in her fishpond to prevent the water and the fish from becoming a block of ice, so I suppose ping pong balls might work
