The Dogmother
Oh, that's a shame Sarah - I'm sorry to hear about your Mum's situation.
Charlottechicken
Sarah, you should be able to become an appointee for your mum regarding her state pension and any other DWP benefits she may be entitled to. Anyone can be this, not necessarily the next of kin. Speak to someone at your local pensions service office. Look here for info. www.thepensionservice.gov.uk If she is self funding in her care home I hope she receives either Disability Living Allowance (for under 65's) or Attendance Allowance (over 65's). Cinnamon
Yes, that is being sorted out at the moment. Devon County Council are becoming appointees, as they fund her care 9at £1200 a week ), then I shall get a small weekly allowance of about £20 to buy Mum clothes, get her Dental treatment etc. Mum has a private pension plan with Swiss Life, & they are being so hard to deal with re the data protection. I can see why they do it, but you would surely think that in a situation like this there would a a little give & take?
harveypup
Sarah I work in a bank and it is possible for someone to register a "court of protection order" for vulnerable or mentally incapacitated people. It is done through a solicitor but I do not know much more sorry. Just know that we have customers who have one. Will have a look tomoro at work see if I can find out anything else about it. Lesley
I know what it's like Sarah - I was carer for my Gran who lived with me until she died - her Doctor wouldn't talk to me about her medication, but she had become confused when she came out of hospital and wasn't taking the right amount. There was a book for the person who came to do some help with dressing while I was at work and everyone was supposed to write in it daily. The Doctor would never put the medication in it I eventually went to the practice and we had a bit of a slanging match about it. He did however tell me what medication she should be taking - and I had to sort it out I hope you manage to get everything sorted - it must be so difficult! chrisnrob
After all I could get my neighbour's husband to call them and say he's my husband and they'd discuss it with him, as he's a male voice Chris and I have pretended to be each other in the past when on the phone to utility companies - one of the advantages of our relationship I guess It was slightly farcical one day though when I rang, pretending to be Chris and they then needed to speak to me. I had ask Chris to speak to them but pretend to be me as I was already pretending to be him ! Rob

Cate in NZ
A good friend sent my children vouchers from Play.com for Christmas, but registered in my name. They just decided to redeem them, and hubby was helping them. However, he had a query so rang the company. They insisted that because the vouchers were in my name they had to speak to me. I went on line, said "yes, I'm me, yes hubby can deal with it (because I'm not at all interested ), and that was it. How the heck they knew it really was me, hubby could have shipped in our next door neighbour to provide the female voice and spent all my worldly wealth with Play.com It's all a bit of a joke really
Cinnamon
It is madness really, isn't it? My Hubby works from 7am to 7pm - so not office hours, & doesn't have time to phone companies ,so we now have all the utilities in my name, including his mobile phone, just so I can deal with it all. Thats my job, after all
Lesley
I refuse to talk to BT now - they wouldn't let me sort out our 'Friends and Family' numbers a while back because it was all in Carl's name. He never uses the phone! now, when they phone, I tell them I'm not able to answer any of their questions because the bill isn't in my name - and when they ask for Carl I tell them he's not available, won't be available........ for a long time
Ziggy
now, when they phone, I tell them I'm not able to answer any of their questions because the bill isn't in my name - and when they ask for Carl I tell them he's not available, won't be available........ for a long time Ooooh I like that.... I might try that sometime.... 'no can't answer you, it would be against the sacred data protection.... no, can't tell.... my husband? he's abroad and wont be back till the weekend when you are closed... and yes he's leaving again on Monday...'... DH works abroad, but because he buys the techie stuff for the house most things end up in his name, including my mobile phone!!! I love the Chris & Rob thing, being able to pretend to be each other... I wonder how convincing I'd sound if I tried to put on a manly tone!!!! I bet if I tried one of the kids would then come up to me while I'm still on the phone and shout 'mummy why are you talking like that?' Aunty e
Cinnamon, one of my best friends works for the Office of Public Guardianship (which is also part of the department I work for). I could ask her if there's anything else you could do to be able to help your mum and cut out your feckless stepdad if you like? Its a horrible situation to be in with Mum anyhow, but things like this really exasperate it,so all help is very gratefully recieved
