chelsea
None of us here are going to belittle anyone for having a wooden ark. It's down to personal choice after all. The thing that we, as Eglu owners are upset about is the attitide of traditionalists who criticise us for having so called expensive plastic coops. I've been called brainless and a Yuppie on Practical Poultry for having an Eglu but you'll not see any Eglu owner being so unpleasant about any other coop, no matter what it's made from. That's the thing which is so upsetting. I agree Kate. Again it all reverts back to personal choice. I wouldnt dream of putting down someone for having a wooden ark, but in the same breath I wouldnt want anyone to bash my choice of having an eglu either. We are all here for the same reason - the fascination and love of chickens
Guest
bronze, I got mine from e-bay, This is the same seller and a very similar coop/run to ours but it's a bit bigger http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Chicken-coop-Hen-house-Poultry-house-Coup-RUN-008-009_W0QQitemZ220190746505QQihZ012QQcategoryZ46292QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem they have several different ones aswell. They don't seem to stock the one we got any more. this is ours when it was first put together http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/run1.JPG and what it looks like now http://www.liverpoolpoet.talktalk.net/rerun.JPG we like it and so do the chickens
Guest
sshhh - don't tell anyone, but I have a wooden coop rather than an eglu. And I love it! It's really robust, well built, easy to clean, has very very few nooks-and-cranies for the dreaded red mite, and is incredibly pretty to look at. . sounds lovely, have you got a pic? Mrs Frugal
It does sound lovely . I'd like to see a picture too if you've got one.
chickenanne
I still think a lot of people aren't so fussed about what it's made out of, as that we're keeping hens (livestock) primarily as pets, in a "you've no idea about the real world" kind of way. The eglu aspect is just the easy symptom to pick on. My Dad used to keep chickens very much as livestock, and he finds it ridiculously funny that I now have them as pets. However, he also knows fine that it isn't a symptom of "brainless yuppie-dom"; just horribly predictable given my early-childhood obsession with his hens! There's really no excuse for people going onto a forum and being deliberatly insulting to those whose opinions or choices differ from theirs. Most of what happens on a forum is discussion and opinion, after all. I know I'd be offended if someone said my coop wasn't as good as an eglu by insulting me. I don't have a problem with robust discussion but it's the opinion you argue against, not the person.

Guest
i've seen comments saying wooden houses are damp and drafty. We've had ours for 3 months now and even in the most torrential rain it's lovely and dry inside. It's made of pressure treated timber and the sloping roof means the rains just runs off. I've poked my finger thru one of the ventilation holes before letting the girls out in the morning and it feels toasty warm in there. Mine won't last as long as an eglu but maybe by that time we can afford a cube. I think an eglu is a bit small for 4 chickens but I do like the look of a cube. How many nest boxes does a cube have? I didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Our coop has 3.

chickenanne
Thank you all . You can peek in the window at them whilst they're asleep in early evening (bless) and like Poet I find it stays dry and warm in there even in shocking weather. I bet in the summer with the lighter mornings the window will get temporarily covered over pretty smartly - I'm sure it'll make the house light early on so that they (and therefore I) will wake up at some appalling time ! Couperwife
Don't forget that you also need to colour coordinate your chickens to match your Cube, Kev . Apparently that's what us Yuppies do . I searched everywhere for purple chickens, until I discovered anti-peck spray. I'm gutted that Tiffany don't make bumper-bits, though. dont they - oh, no, best try custom made ones though, diamond encrusted, obviously cathy x

Ain't Nobody Here
Your wooden hen houses are all lovely . That's exactly what I wanted to get and would have except for the transportability (?) of the eglu. I didn't think I'd be able to get a wooden house in the back of my car and I do need that option for when we're on holiday. I love my eglu but I would have loved a wooden one just as much . Olly
Kate I just found a nice bit of info for youhttp://forum.rivercottage.net/viewtopic.php?t=2744&highlight=omlet I had to go and read this, and it has made me laugh ... specially the person who said 'you need to get the shovel in, otherwise how would you clean it'. chelsea
have you seen the other thread with the poll in it? menagerie
it's my money and I'll buy what I want! Quite honeslty I assume that most people on the rc forum are far richer/middle class than us- they porbably all have nice houses in the ciuntry that cost a fortune and drive 4x4s. Many of us live in towns and cities and an eglu is practical. My neighbours think my eglu is cool, not embarrassing. I don't have room in my garden for many chickens or converting a 6x4 shed etc. I think the eglu was a reasonable price compared with other wooden houses i looked at online and at a country store. And it is bright and fun and easy to look after and move about. If Omlet has a good product why shouldn't they cash in on it? I think they've done a great job promoting chicken keeping to people like me who might not otherwise have considered it or been brave enough to actually do it. Rant over!
