auntie_teleute
Hello all you fabulous chicken people, Does any one have any tips/ solutions for crowing hens? At least one of my Pekin Bantams shouts (crows?) persistently 1st thing in the morning. I keep the eglu covered so they can't see the light and shut the door (doesn't work). Putting treats down takes their mind off it for a while, but isn't perfect (no good if I'm away/ chickens will get fat!). I've been hoping that they will grow out of it, but no joy yet. They wake me (and my husband up) through closed double glazed windows, so I'm sure they must be disturbing my neighbours. I love my girls dearly, but I'm finding the early mornings and worrying tough. Has anyone resolved this problem? Many thanks, Julia
The Dogmother
Are you sure that it's not a cockerel? You don't mention whether they are young, or laying. My pekins are probbaly the noisiest out of the lot, but try squirting them with water when they do it.. a face full of water soon stops them. In hens , 'pseudo-crowing' is a sign of dominance. It's not unknown for hens to 'turn male' either.
feemcg
They can make very loud egg-laying 'announcements' too. In the lightest mornings last summer (what summer ) mine used to make a terrible racket - I was sure a neighbour would complain. If 2 or 3 of them were at it at once I'd open and close my back door - then they would stop and look to see if I was coming.
Egluntyne
Hmmmmmm Some of my girls announce that they have laid an egg.....but it isn't "persistent".....nor is it first thing as a rule. As Claret says.....are you absolutely certain it is not a cockerel? Can you post some pics?

Janty
My lavender pekin is noisy. She spent the first two weeks of her time with us practically living inside after the big girls piucked on her. Now she shouts every morning until she gets a snuggle or the chance to sit on my shoulder. She is perfectly happy after this and goes about her business quite quietly. Does she want a bit of extra attention or something? Sounds daft but it works every time with ours.
Chicken Licken
Both of mine SHOUT in the mornings - I take the dog out at about 0630 and they think that this is when they should be allowed out to free range - they go out when I get back and make them porrige - this then shuts them out and they potter around in the dark until I go to work and then they get shut out. I find they tend too SHOUT if they think there is someone around they think should let them out - they soon settle and as my neighbours are prone to spoiling them rotten we just muddle along!! Eggs go a long way to smooth the way!
chelsea
I find they tend too SHOUT if they think there is someone around they think should let them out - Mine do this. My Ella (hybrid) and Coco the maran are really noisy chooks. I cover the eglu in summer to keep it dark longer. My chooks have been known to wake me in the front bedroom from inside the eglu . I agree it can be a worry - i love to hear them crow but i just wish i didnt have neighbours - cos its them i worry about! I dont know what the cure is.....if you find out let me know please my lovely fluffy cochins dont make a sound - they are very quiet hens. Funny you should say that Janty; my lavender pekin is a right madam and likes the sound of ehr own voice
