lizandged
I am building a coop in my garden. I have built the frame but now need some chicken wire. I have seen all different types and gauges of wire. What is the minimun guage I should use? What is the maximum size the mesh should be? Is 1 inch by 0.5 inch at 19 guage Ok. Thanks for any help and advice.
MedusA
There is a recent thread on here somewhere about the merits of weldmesh rather than chicken wire due to being more fox-resistant. I'm just finishing off my new permanent run and used weldmesh which I bought on ebay. It's really thick, and I would definitely recommend it. toastedblue
I've just finished my coop, see "chicken run inspiations" page 7, and used 1" x 1" 19g weldmesh it's cheap, and easy to cut with pliers/tin snips, but strong enough to keep the most persistent predator out 16g is about 2/3 more expensive (£54 as apposed to £31 for 30m) and, IMO, not worth the extra cost if you're on a budget check www.yell.com for weldmesh suppliers before you go to screwfix or ebay btw, when designing your run bear in mind weldmesh usually comes in 2ft, 3ft or 4ft widths... oops... too late
Egluntyne
Definitely use weldmesh. Foxes and rats can both bite through chicken wire.
hilda-and-evadne
I've just finished my coop, see "chicken run inspiations" page 7, and used 1" x 1" 19g weldmesh Toastedblue, your run is FAB. This may be a silly question but I have looked on the site for this information and not found it - what is the "footprint" of the eglu - I would love to adopt toastedblue's idea of having the eglu on its own table/shelf. hilda-and-evadne
Look **here** Thank you! That page is just what I was looking for, I've printed it off - I don't know how I missed it - while I was talking myself into having hens, I kept coming back and going round and round the web site ... Egluntyne
I spent months on the site whilst I was pondering about keeping chickens!
MedusA
I just wanted to let everyone know that even with 16 gauge weldmesh on my new run, I saw evidence that a fox has been chewing at it yesterday. It hadn't been able to chew through it, but I'm sure that a thinner gauge would have been bitten through. If you have foxes anywhere around 16 gauge is the minimum in my opinion. Better safe than sorry. Foxes - grrrrrrrr!
