haventadog
I just had a home check because we are thinking of having a dog. Checking the garden, she asked if the chickens were ever let out of the run. Told her they were and showed her the netting fenced off area, and she said good because the run was not big enough for them.. I only have two chickens in it - they are not in there all the time but I thought the benefit of the run was that it was okay?
chelsea
im not being funny but I would take no notice of what some person from the RSPCA said. Your girls are absolutely fine in the run . The RSPCA are the last people I would take advice from on animal husbandry. (As you can gather - they really annoy me ) Your girls are just fine
jomaxsmith
I was told chickens can live like kings or paupers. Your chooks don't know any different so they're fine! Jo
chelsea
Is it the RSPCA that support the 'enriched' battery cages and is currently running a promotional scheme with Macdonalds! Edited February 8, 2008 by Guest
Christian
Sorry Chelsea! I just deleted that post as I wanted to check my facts before a broad 'sweeping' statement! You are fast!!
Olly
I believe (and someone will soon correct me, I'm sure!) that the BHWT approved the Omlet run? I agree, I don't think the RSPCA know that much about chickens or they wouldn't be endorsing the 'enriched' cages!
iChicken
I was interested to read that the RSPCA endorse enriched cages as I wasn't aware they do. Infact they actively campaign against any kind of cages for poultry. I've done a Google search and many web sites claim that the RSPCA endorse them, however I've yet to find anything written by the RSPCA that says this. The furthest they go is by saying enriched cages are little better than conventional cages.
Paola
The Omlet chaps would have done ooodles of research while designing the eglu, run and would not have made a product that was not up to the job I dare say that you prob know more about keeping chickens then the inspector

You are right, iChicken, I stand corrected I have now checked the RSPCA website and there's no mention of it ... however I am positive that I read somewhere that they WERE supporting the 'enriched' ones - obviously they are better than the other sort, but still not good! I do accept that their website says they would like to see all cages banned ... anyway, don't want to get off topic, but apologies if I've inadvertently perpetuated a myth. I still think the Omlet run is absolutely fine for chickens! mine have no complaints.
bronze
We had an rspca inspector round. One of our nosy neighbours had said that we kept our dog in a box in the garden all the time. Imagine his surprise when he turned up to find a 6x10 foot kennel that the dog went into while I did the school run. Half an hour twice a day. Anyway he saw my chickens and said it was a lovely set up. I'm not sure about the stance as a whole but I guess different people will have their own opnions anyway. Gallina
The Eglu run is adequate, but not palatial. I felt the Eglu run was a bit on the small side when my hens grew. I bought two extensions, and then the Cube, which gives more headroom and a chance for them to spread their wings more. My hens were never unhappy in the small Eglu run, however. As long as you stick to two, which isn't easy (hens I mean, not Eglus ... though sticking to two Eglus isn't easy either).
