Treekeeper
Don't use bark use wood chippings Or hemcore or Auboise or Easibed, bark gets spores in it.
Guest
just put it on top of the grass, the chickens will soon get rid of the grass for you anyway
chelsea
just put it on top of the grass, the chickens will soon get rid of the grass for you anyway Thats what we did, and the grass just disappeared. Its fine just to put your hemcore/chippings on top of mud/grass/pavings etc.
chrisnrob
Just to confirm what others have said - it's fine to put the chippings on top of the grass. A few weeks of chickens scratching around in it and all the grass will have disappeared anyway! Up until recently we used bark chippings in the run until we found out that it can harbour spores which can lead to respiratory diseased in chickens. Indeed, when we did remove it all a month or so ago we did find lots of white mould under the surface layer. We have now replaced it with wood chippings which we got from a local tree surgeon and they're much better. They seem cleaner and don't go nearly as slimey when the get wet. Plus they're easy to level again when our two go on a digging spree Rob
