toastedblue
just come back from the pet shop, after buying what I thought was poultry mixed grit, only to find it's crushed oyster shells it's a 25kg bag so I don't want to open it if it's the wrong stuff should I take it back ? there is the possibility they didn't understand me, me being a Geordie and they being Welsh
Christian
I would take it back. You will never get through a 25kg bag of oyster shell. The mixed grit is quite large. I was surprised by the size of each 'stone'. A 1 kg bag will do for a couple of months, I'm sure.
toastedblue
took it back, they're getting the proper co"Ooops, word censored!"(sp) grit in on Monday although they did say it was the right stuff, just the "fine" version... it was very fine
Christian
It was probably for caged birds like parrots. I'm sure your chickens will appreciate your efforts!
Egluntyne
I've had a 25kg bag of the co"Ooops, word censored!" stuff for nearly a year and an only about an eighth of the way into it!
asolomio
Are crushed oyster shells no good then?
Egluntyne
Are crushed oyster shells no good then? Oh yes...they are, but for poultry you need the mixed grit which contains little stones of various sizes as well as the oyster shell pieces.. For grinding food up in the hens gizzard. Vital stuff. dogduck
we have oyster shells as well but no mixed grit but our girls are free rangeing in the garden so will there pick it up from the soil or will we need to get some !!!
Egluntyne
They will pick stones up....but I would get a small bag and let them help themselves ad lib from a heavy pot (I use a small plant pot which is secured into the ground with a tent peg). They will know what to do.
