Totty
My family and I went to Millars Ark Farm today in Odiham on an open day and have fallen in love totally with Giant Brahma's. I was a little apprehensive as were the rest of my family to pick one up but what a surprise we all got, A gentle giant.... My eldest daughter couldnt stop picking them up and giving them a cuddle. We would really like to get some as we have all fallen in love!!! I have had a look on the web to see if I could see anywhere that I maybe able to get some but have been unsuccessful so far. Can anyone point me in the right direction??? These would be our first chickens, We have a Mark 1 Eglu and the standard 2m run so would limit it to 2 so they have plenty of room (they are big birds), we were hoping to get some ex-bats also but I am still waiting for the Surrey Co-ordinator to contact me and we are getting all excited about owning our own chooks (which we have already named, Totty & Delia) If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks
Bondinho
There is a woman in Swindon who has a lot of Araucanas, Brahams, Vorverks, Hamburgs and Orpingtons for sale. Her number is 01793 770362, Godwin Farm on edge of Swindon. Nice woman and plenty of birds to choose from still I think I got my sister 2 Araucanas, a Brahma, a Brahma/Araucana cross and a Brahma/Vorverk cross from her a few weeks ago. The Brahma/Araucana cross is lush! Oh, but I don't know if a Brahma would fit in a mark 1 eglu??
Egluntyne
Will the door of the Mark 1 Eglu be big enough for the Giant Brahma to squeeze in and out of? It is significantly smaller than the door of a Mark 2.
Totty
Thanks for the replies, To be honest I don't know if they will fit, more research is going to be needed before a final decisions is made. I am assuming that te Eglu is a Mk 1 because it's around 3/4 years old. Does anyone have any expereinces of trying to fit a Brahma into an Eglu? Have a good day everyone,
Egluntyne
Here is a picture of my gorgeous Yellow Mark 1 Eglu for comparison. The door is 12" high and 10 " wide. Not very big at all.
Bondinho
I know a Brahma fits into a Mark 2 eglu ok, it does fill alot of space mind! But as egluntine mentioned the Mark 1 eglu is smaller.
little chickadee
In the advice for even the mark II eglu I think that it says that it's not suitable for heavy breeds, and you can't get much heavier than a Brahma I'm afraid Someone may come along and contradict me though....................... I know that Janty has Brahmas, but she keeps them in a cube
CatsCube
I have a brahma and I wouldnt think it would fit in a mark 1 eglu, I think it would be a push to get in a mark 2 even. Might I suggest a miniture Brahma? Janty has 1 or 2 that she had to swap her full saze ones for as they turned out to be males. That way you could have even more! Drop her a PM and ask where she got them from.
Helen&Lee
I have 4 Brahmas - but they live in a cube and I've never had an Eglu so can't compare... However I just wanted to echo your thoughts about them - they are fab! My 8yr old neice can't leave them alone when she's here and with the exception of Attila they just sit quietly in her hold Helen
BeckyBoo
Oh I want I want, I'd love a buff Columbian Brahma, but I@m not allowed any more hens Also I'm not sure if the Surrey coordinator is still doing it, I ended up going to the Sussex rescue for our ex-batts as the Surrey lady had had to stop doing it. Try the Sussex or Berks coordinator they should be able to tell you Mrs Bertie
Totty
Thanks for all the posts, I have found out the the Eglu is a Mark II today . I must say a big thank you to Jeanette who has sold me the Eglu and her excellent lists & tips for what I need and what to do. Jeanette also provides my office with a regular supply of eggs which taste FAB I heard back from the Surrey Co-ordinator from BHWT today and she has told me that ideally we should take 3 and that due to the amount of people asking for Ex-Batts, it could take 4 weeks plus before we can get some . There is going to be a rescue in Wokingham in March so she is going to speak to the Berkshire co-ordinator to see if we can go on her list and maybe get them sooner . So..... have to convince my hubby tonight that three ex-batts are really a good idea. Dinner is his favourite tonight... so that should help. What about the Gentle Giants, I hear some of you say.... well...... Common sense has prevailed and I have decided to hold on for a bit I would want to make sure, we really could fit them in the Eglu plus the Ex-Batts. I am now looking at my two daughters very large play house and thinking.... hmmm if we sell that, we could fit in a cube and I could have lots more chooks....... I am going to think on that idea a little more. LOL... I am sure I am going to pester you guys a little more over the forthcoming weeks asking for info and things and I will post once I know when we can expect our ex-batts. Thanks everyone
chelsea
We have cochins who are very similar to Brahmas. I dont know about giant brahma's though as they must be even bigger. Its not so much the eglu itself but the run. My girls are balls of feathers so they can get in the eglu doors fine. We have our own purpose built walk in run so they have plenty of height to stretch. I wouldnt recommend a standard run for brahmas as they are very tall (like my cochins) so need headroom more than anything!!
Totty
We are getting three ex-batts.... YEAHHHHHHH Hubby last night agreed for us to increase from 2 to 3 so have got my name down now on Surrey & Berkshire's list. It's not likely to be before April, which is a shame but does give us a chance to get everything together so we are ready for them. Got to think about another name now..... We quite like Karma... The lady at BHWT mentioned about getting a cover for the Eglu, (I assume she means the run rather than the Eglu itself) Is the Omlet one the best or should I just look at getting tarpoling and using the bungee clips to secure it in place ?? What have you all found that works best for you? Cheers
Snowy
Great news about the chickens! A cheap shower curtain makes a perfect run cover - 89p for the clear ones from Ikea.
Hen Watch
Some tarp and bungee clips would be fine whatever you have already to save any expense. Mine have a shower curtain plus the Omlet winter shade (which I don't rate much). In the summer you only need part of the run covered for sun shade, but this Winter my run turned into a sloshy mess with the rain that's why I keep it covered (and put Auboise on the ground of the run).
