Catsareus
Good morning everyone Just had my 2 chickens for about 10 days and have been allowed to free range since last Tusesday. This is usually for at least a couple of hours in the afternoon. However when they are let out of their eglu in the morning, they just pace up and down looking at the garden and look really restless. They don't seem to want to eat their pellets and generally make me feel really guilty that I haven't let them out! Do all hens do this? Reassurance please to ease my conscience! Christian
They will be fine, they only do it to make you feel guilty! If you watch them from afar, i bet they will be wandering around, taking a nap, eating, drinking etc. They are very good at the tiger pacing! Glad it is going well. Egluntyne
They all do it, and have probably caught sight of you and think that you are going to let them out! Try looking at them from a different window.....they will probably not be doing it. That is what I have found. Don't let them guilt trip you. Laura & CTB
Yes - same thing here! The girls just love to make you feel guilty because you're not letting them out every time you go out. Bless them
MedusA
The little devils will guilt-trip you every time! Ditto the previous advice.
Helen&Lee
Yep! Its the guilt trip thing Mine run to the door of the run and start head-butting it when they see me If I leave the conservatory door open they 'bok bok' but once closed they settle down to normal mooching - until they think they see movement from the house Helen
Catsareus
Phew, thanks for that everyone. You're right, they do see you at the window or door, I couldn't believe it at first, so will resort to sneaky looks at them in the future. As I was in this morning and will be out later, I relented and had let them out, but then they stood on the patio waiting by the doors for ages hoping for some extra food. However I was hoovering and went up to the patio window and that made them scarper pretty quick! Now just mooching around the garden. hillfamily
I've mastered making a cuppa whilst keeping below the Kitchen window so I'm not spotted They love playing the guilt card - they learn it very quickly

Eyren
When they're free ranging, mine sprint to the back door every time they see me in the conservatory Chickens may not have very big brains, but they learn some things quickly, and once they get an idea in their little heads, they are amazingly persistent! Bumble gave the big fat woodpigeon who comes into the garden to clear up under the bird feeder a right telling off this afternoon Wings a flap and loads noise later the woodpigeon left in disgust!
