cluckbok
Hi all, I know you can test the freshness of an egg by placing it in a glass of water, but I thought you were not supposed to wet eggs? I have never washed eggs that are dirty as the shell is porous and will allow bacteria into the egg. So surely testing the freshness in this way might do the same and mean the egg is no longer safe to eat? Any ideas???
Snowy
Usually, if you are testing the egg for freshness, you will be cooking and eating it straight away so no chance for anything to happen (just a guess - I honestly don't know!! )
Egluntyne
I agree with Snowy! TBH I don't have to test eggs at Egluntine Towers for freshness....they are rarely over a week old as they are in such demand.
cluckbok
hopefully that will be the case for us, fresh eggs everyday. I hadn't thought about the fact that the egg would be cooked straight after so little time for any bacteria to take hold. That makes perfect sense now. Thanks
CatsCube
Eggs generally last for a month, so the best thing to do it mark the date on your eggs when they are laid with a pencil. And just if you find you have kept them for long enough or them to be nearly a month old you can do the freshness test right before you use them to be sure. Welcome to the forum BTW. Hope your all having fun with your new chickens.

Eyren
I just clean any mucky eggs immediately before use - though changing the shredded paper in the nestbox regularly helps to keep them clean
