Cinnamon
I bought some little red cabbage seedlings at the weekend, but they don't have any planting instructions Should I keep them sheltered until the frosts are over,or do you think they will be OK? Tara.F
I always start mine in modules mainly for space issues rather than frost, but I find they are also less prone to pest damage this way. I pot on and pot on until the perfect spot opens up for them (usually in a mixed border amongst the flowers)
Lesley
I agree with Tara- it's a good way of ensuring you have big, healthy plants to put out.
chickencam
we pot on all of our brassicas because we are plagued with club root and they are much less susceptible to this when they are planted as large strong plants
Cinnamon
OK, I will pot them on for now, but shall I keep them in for the moment or put them on the patio?
Eyren
Depends if you have pigeons around, or where your girls free-range! We've had some hard frosts lately, so if you can keep them inside a bit longer in a position that gets plenty of light, that would be ideal. Then when they are a bit bigger, start hardening them off by putting them out in the day and bringing them in at night. If you have some horticultural fleece they could go outside under that a bit earlier, but if not, you should probably put them under chicken wire or bird netting - and in either case, keep an eye out for the first cabbage white butterflies and use crushed eggshells to keep the slugs at bay as well! Cinnamon
Yes,I will most certainly protect them from those darned pigeons, after losing all my green cabbage & broccoli overnight over Christmas Thanks for the advice.I really must tackle the horribly spidery greenhouse & see what pots & compost I have
Lesley
You'll have to send the hens in first Sarah!
