pelicano
How is everyone doing with this? I'm currently using 100% castor oil, but I think when it gets colder I'll be back to 50/50 castor/jojoba.
Olly
I'm not using any castor oil at all, I found it too drying. I'm currently using some almond oil I got at Neal's Yard because it was reduced, but I've used any sort of massage oil base. Despite a recent outbreak of spots, I think my skin has been much calmer since I used this, and I've had far fewer 'breakouts'. The blocked pores are still there, but I wasn't expecting miracles. I am very cautious about steaming my face as I've already got thread veins, so I tend to use the oil and then just wash off with a warm flannel. I just love the fact that its cheap, and I know exactly what I'm putting on my face - no chemicals!
Snowy
I've only done it a few times - because I don't wear make up, I find I only need a warm, damp cloth to clean, and no moisturiser; so Ijust do an oil clean every few weeks. But my skin feels great!
Tiggy
I have very sensitive skin but this works well, I've reduced the amount of castor oil because its too drying and added lavender and clary sage esssential oils, it smells lovely
Olly
I'm still using this, I gave up on using castor oil altogether as it was very drying. I had a brief interlude when I ran out and just used olive oil, but that didn't seem so good - I'm back to the Neals' Yard oil again, almond oil this time and all is calm! pelicano
I'm now using sunflower oil (with no castor oil). It's a much lighter oil, and has helped even more - I can't tell you the difference in my skin since before I started the OCM.
Trish
I'm using 25% caster oil and 75% jojoba and it working really well for me.
Groovychook
Ooh! I've only just come across this thread & I'm going to give it a whirl! I've just bought a bottle of aveda liquid exfoliant though, which was quite pricey, so might have to wait until I've finished it It all sounds very promising though! Just a couple of questions; Is it just normal, supermarket sunflower oil that you use and does it matter if you use a normal flannel or is a muslin cloth better? Can't wait to give it a go- my skin is always congested- not always spotty but blocked pores and dull looking with dry patches. I'd love to be able to throw my concealer away! pelicano
Good luck with it!! I use regular shops' own brand sunflower oil, and just a regular flannel. I do use a fresh flannel every day though, to ensure it's got no bacteria build up.
Groovychook
Thanks pelicano! I've been out & bought my caster oil today so I'm good to go! Can't wait!
pelicano
How is everyone doing with this? I'm still using sunflower oil only, and have just switched to a 'posh' one (from Aromantic) rather than a supermarket one, just to see if it's the same. The jury is still out, but I think it's probably all much of a muchness!
bluekarin
I'm going to have a go with this. I still get breakouts despite being 37! I was wondering if since my skin is dry it would work, but after reading the article it appears it does! How often do you all do it? Every night or a few times a week? pelicano
I do it every night, and basically do no other cleansing whatsoever. What oil/s were you thinking of trying?
Chook n Boo Mum
I've been doing it with almond oil that I found in the chemist, not an expensive one at all. I started off adding lavender oil or a drop of teatree if I was spotty, although I just use the oil now. & once my skin settled down I am finding it really good. I still get the odd spot, but no more than when I was using Clinique! I don't use anything else other than the hot water in the shower and a smear of AO every morning & a quick wipe over at night if I'm awake enough to remember! Sometimes I look a bit like an oil slick has landed, but nothing a tissue can't sort out! My only concern is sun protection - as in it has none!!! Do you slap on suncream over the top, which in my case would probably send my skin into confused irritation mode again! Sha x
pelicano
Yes, I think the sun protection issue is the down side. I've just bought a moisturiser with SPF in it for the hot weather (here's hoping we actually get some! ), and I hope it won't upset my skin too much. I'll still continue the OCM as usual though, as I did last summer, but will just add the moisturiser over the top (particularly on my nose, which always goes red!) ClaireG
My skin has been getting really dry and tight. I think it's a combinaton of the meds i'm on and stress. I found some peach kernal oil that i had for aromatherpy, added a drop each of geranium essential oil and tea tree to it and cleansed my face with it last night. My skin is lovely, soft and smooth and doesn't feel dry or tight at all
bluekarin
I am using Sunflower oil as thats all I have. Actually, I have a small bottle of almond oil so I might try that. I did my first oil clease last night. Found it didn't get rid of all my mascara (maybe need to do it for longer?) and even though I wiped them, I still had a lot of oil in my eyes. I had to stop trying to read and go to sleep. I am still using my usual daily moisteriser as it has SPF 15 and my skin gets affected quite badly from the sun if I don't use any sun protection. Redwing
Some chemists are cadgy about selling castor oil for some reason but for anyone having trouble getting hold of it I got mine from an agricultural merchants, it was £2 for 250ml Edited May 25, 2009 by Guest
bluekarin
I've just found a site which says the reason for castor oil not being sold in shops is because it was used by pregnant women to bring on labour. It was also used as a laxative, but because other things are being used now so its now obsolete. Apparently shops need a license to sell it!
