Feathered Legs?

Recommended Posts

DEFRA scientists are involved in a Europe-wide survey on the issue of feathered chicken legs (seriously!)

Scientists have noticed that over the last 50 years many more breeds of chicken - pure-bred and hybrid have nore feathers on their legs.

Much of the statistical data is coming from large concentrations of battery hens - but scientists want to rule out the possibility that it is a side-effect of the drugs fed to battery chickens - and so they are gathering information from a broader spectrum of chicken owners and breeders, and they are particularly interested in organic owners.

Dr April Bailey - research coordinator for the DEFRA project : "We would welcome information from any chicken breeder/owner of any size. We need to get as broad a picture as possible. We need to owners to take a sample of their flock and simply count the number of feathers that grow on any part of the leg."

Anyone wishing to participate should send their leg-feather count (per leg) - and a note of the chicken breed and (approximate age) to:

DEFRAlegcount@europrojects.defra.ac.uk

I'm off to count those leg feathers!
