Cate in NZ
Yes, Helen, I was with you thinking that with Spring here we could relax a bit. It was only a matter of time before it arrived here... but just think of the fun the media will have with this one now. I'm already fed up of the mass grave hysteria..... the media report all this stuff...... and then folk end up coming in to see me at work fretting their chances of contracting bird flu. I'll keep my shower curtains in place for now then
Lesley
The report which has just been on BBC News seemed quite logical and well balanced - let's hope it continues. We've got new chickens on order, to be delivered in the next few weeks so I hope they don't stop the movement of birds
buffie
Keep calm eh! A swan in fife, not yet confirmed. All the right biosecurity will be in place and we all use common sense. It's not foot and mouth and we can take the correct precautions as and when required. Life goes on as does pet hen keeping BBx
Chicken on a mission
I have been putting off getting a run extension but I think I will have to get one once I get this months housekeeping
motherhen
Important thing to notice is that so far it is just identified as one of the H5 strains - most of which are endemic in wild birds anyway and the swan could well have died from old age or lead poisoning. ali-s
BUM! My new girls are east of Edinburgh, which we are collecting on the 15th April. Fingers crossed. I was getting so excited and even contemplated bringing the collection forward to this weekend when OH gets home. BUM BUM BUM BUM Are you out of the exclusion zone Shona? I looked on the map but couldn't guage the distance.
Guest
We're just outside Edinburgh, so well out of the exclusion and survellence zones, but it is still worrying close! If it had been a swan down in England, I would have been concerned, but not overly. Given that it is just over the Forth, it's just a wee bit close for comfort. We always have swans and ducks flying over, and we all sat and watched the other day as a huge flock of ducks or geese (too high up for me to tell) flew over, and we sat rather smugly laughing as someone sneezed as they walked passed the garden while the birds were overhead, and Owen asked if it had been one of them! Popcorn
I've just been watching the 'Wright Stuff' and a man from Fife called in to say that he lives about 100 yards from where the swan was found, and as far as he was aware, there have been no exclusion zones put in place and people are coming and going as normal. Can the government be trusted with what it is telling us? Weren't we all supposed to die of AIDS 20 years ago, or SARS, or BSE recently...... Guest
Confirmed as HN51. The scary thing is, it took the authorities so long to come and pick up the bird.
Louise
The bird was seen dead on the 29th and picked up during the working day on the 30th so why has it taken till today to confirm the test VLA at Weybridge are not normally so slow
Guest
Another sensationalist news report then - woman on the Scottish news claimed that the swan had been lying for days before it was picked up. *note to self - must remember the news like to exagerate..... I looked on the map but couldn't guage the distance. Nothing on Defra site yet, just sky news confirming H5N1, but I think the exclusion zone for movements is 10km at most and may just be 3km. If you could pick them up sooner than the 15th it might be a good idea, although I don't think there is a strong risk of other cases from one dead swan that has died at sea. Happymama
Well, not something I'm proud of, but I did put a tenner on it being over here by Easter! My hens are currently rooting in the flowerbeds, I'm going to have to put the eglu back on grass if I'm keeping them in all the time, and it's not growing yet, so pu, big holes in the grass then. They do so like digging holes, there's a thing eight inches wide and four inches deep behind the garage! Off to order a run extension. Before Omlet run out. motherhen
ITV news just said confirmed as H5 but not yet confirmed as H5N1 - backed up by Prof John Oxford. Exlusion zone is 3km and surveillance zone is 10km.
ali-s
Just sent OH a text informing him we will be picking up he chickens on Saturday (as long as the situation is the same and we are allowed). OH is going to love driving down to Edinburgh Saturday morning. He is driving up from Glasgow tonight/ very early Friday Been and checked the new run which OH assured me he had been finished before he went away and I can see it still needs some work doing on it The new wooden chicken coop he built hasn't any ventilations holes in it and the door opens inwards The new chickens already seem to be mine as I have given them names. It would be a shame after such a long search for them I wasn't allowed to have them.
Happymama
I've just heard on our local radio station that it's H5NI, official confirmation to be broadcast in a couple of hours. Gives time for the government and defra time to sort out their story and hopefully gag the bloomin' press a bit. I've ordered my extensions. Also on the radio was the chap who found the offending swan - thought it had been in the water for some time, and it had been eaten by something too! Oh my... ali-s
I know I am not supposed to panic, but can I please, just a little panic. Does any one know how to use a power drill. That new coop needs ventilations holes!
Happymama
I know I am not supposed to panic, but can I please, just a little panic. Does any one know how to use a power drill. That new coop needs ventilations holes! Plug it in, point drill bit where you need the hole and proceed with caution ... If it's fragile material, or so hard and smooth the drill bit might slip, tape a cross where you want to drill and drill through the middle of the tape first. Gives a bit of grip to the bit ( ). Don't drill through the cable. If you must, please consider wearing good strong wellington boots while you do it. hth
Louise
I heard that about the swans in Glasgow on the local news too I hope the exclusions don't cause you a problem Ali
motherhen
The strain in Fife has been confirmed as H5N1 However, the RSPB and vet guy they interviewed said they managed to contain to a very localised area the last outbreak of very similar H5 a few years ago. They said the exclusion and supervision zones now are much stronger than they had then, so they are pretty confident of confining it to the immediate area Is there anyone within 10km of fife? Let us know so we can send you lots of support and remind you of the beneficial effects of chocolate.
