Poachedegg has got Chickens!!! PHOTOS ADDED

Recommended Posts

Well we went and got them! :D:D:D

We went for 3 Red Rockets - Very similar to Gingernut Rangers. The shed that had more variety were 2 weeks younger, so we went for 3 of these as we were advised that these were a better temperament etc for 1st timers/children.

They are 19 weeks, so may already be laying or not far off!!

I held one whilst Lisa at Garden Poultry clipped their wings - I have never held a chicken before!

One is brownish - Betty

One has a variety of different shades on her feathers - Mabel

One had ginger specks on the back of her neck - Gladys.

They are in the Eglu house for the next 40 mins or so to settle in, but they had a peck around the run before being 'persuaded' to go in.

After all the mud at Garden Poultry (loads of rain last few days) - the run with its grass, hemcore and scattered corn look liked a 5* chook hotel!

Have taken some pics - will try and load them up later.

( bet you've been stood watching chickens haven't you ? )

How did you guess? :D

Photos will have to be tonight a OH is going to do them and he is outside putting trellis on the fence.

Have given them some weetabix and raisins but they are not interested, so a bit too soon for treats I think!

Don't know what a laying hen does but Betty is very quiet and seems to be just sitting and quite puffed up - perhaps an egg on its way??

Just tried the dog (Ruby) on a lead in the garden, not too fussed at the moment, so will keep taking her out on the lead and hopefully she'll get used to them.

I have just posted on Eggs, however perhaps somebody can answer - Betty laid an egg before !! But it was a soft one.

As she is 19 weeks I presume she has only just started laying, so perhaps this is not unusual?

She laid it in the run - will she learn to use the nesting box?

Does this mean we should get one every day?

Buzz's first egg was a double yolker ( twins!) , but then she laid quite a few softies until she go into the swing of things, sometimes in the run, sometimes on the roosting bars.

I remember a thread about hens laying softies anywhere but the nest box.Maybe they know that they are going to lay a softie?

The softie that we think Gladys laid was in the nesting box - so one of them knows where to do it.

Was going to open the nest box door before to see them in there but I was too scared in case one jumped out!!

Have just mopped the kitchen and utility floor because there has been so much to and froing outside and with it being wet - it has been an exciting day but boy am I shattered.

Going to sit in the Living Room in a minute and watch Foyles War (sky+ it) with a long Southern Comfort and Lemonade, ice and a slice!

...........Cheers Everyone :D:D
